Fun fact: If you have the Guinness World book of '96... you'll find images of Super Mario Kart R. How do I know? Because I have that book and took me years to realize it was Mario Kart 64 because of the difference UI and characters.

The characters actually do “speak” in the final game…but not from bumping into things. However, they usually only say “🎶” whenever the player uses the breaks to save them from spinning out from a banana or from doing too many rapid turns in 150cc.

The “R” meant Reality. The N64’s original code name was Project Reality. The magazines all had this wrong.

Nintendo: "We had many issues programming collision detection."

Also Nintendo: "Yeah, we totally made the physics super realistic, but it ended up being boring to play so we scrapped it."

I love how Kamek was only replaced by DK because Nintendo just simply went

"Call Rare if we can use their model :)"

This is also the first time Rareware's DK design has appeared outside of the Donkey Kong Country trilogy.

Imagine if another gigaleak happened that revealed a lot of N64 prototypes and betas, like how the 2020 gigaleak revealed a lot of SNES prototypes and betas

I'd love for you to cover Mario 64 again at some point! Since there is SO much more to cover!

i’m honestly glad you are primarily focusing on the real interesting differences from the beta to the final game instead of focusing on the grass being different from the beta to the final game

It’s tragically ironic that Kamek went from being cut from MK64 to finally being added in Tour/8 Deluxe, only for him to be relegated to an item in Mario Kart World.

MK64 is probably the Mario Kart I think the least about, but it does have some interesting beta elements. I like the town track and the yet to be seen parking lot track (admittedly I’m a fan of Mario Kart city tracks), and some of the items are quite interesting.

15:35 another fun fact, the guy who created bubsy the bobcat while he was developing bubsy 3D. He actually came to the show to see what Nintendo was up to, only to discover that they were making Mario 64 which was significantly better. So at that point he basically just gave up. At least I think it was this event or it was an event similar to this, but it's still very interesting😊

I always thought that the main reason that Super Mario Kart R was renamed to Mario Kart 64 was to avoid being confused with Sonic R.

24:03 Interestingly enough, those early portraits of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad are in the final games’ “Game Select” menu icons, with it just being their heads. Most likely since they’re facing forward.

Mario Kart R
Sonic R
F-Zero X
Rayman M

At least they are consistent of naming a multiplayer racing game with a single letter.

The feather was scrapped so late that it is on the rear of the N64 console box in some pal areas.

26:30 Peach's portait is slighty different from the final game here

14:42 it's funny that they considered these to be more realistic than the other stages you'd have in the game, since these all look like mostly flat colors
then again, they might've been comparing them to the placeholder textures for other stuff

The advertisement logos such as as the Good Year logo is awesome.

Little side note, most of the sponsors from the Japanese version are spoofs of Racing sponsors from F1 and NASCAR

Marioro - Marlboro
Koopa Air - Good Year
Yoshi 1 - Mobil 1
LuigiP - Agip
Shot - Shell Pennzoil
64 Ball on Luigi Raceway - 76 Fuel

One more thing Andrew! Current MK64 Runner Abney317 found a shortcut in Town by bouncing off of one of the walls lol.

On top of that I wrote my Senior Seminar History Paper about the History of Nintendo as a company in which my Professor/Advisor was very impressed.

Mario Kart 64 is one of my favorite games on the N64. Also at 28:47 you said the wrong track. It's Moo Moo Farm not Moo Moo Meadows.
