I am so disappointed that the concept of Mario turning into a live action dude didn’t make it in. That sounds incredible lmao

RIP tsundere commentator, the world was not ready for you

Another reason the pixel-head Mario might have been scrapped, just speculating, is that unless EVERY character got turned into a color-coded pixel *Mario* specifically, and not whatever character they actually are, the character's "block heads" would have different amounts of blocks, be different sizes, etc.

Whosever idea it was for singing and dancing piranha plants… thank you.

29:18 Before this, I never even noticed there was someone shouting "Wonder!" Blew my mind.

"They wanted players to be able to pick their favorite character without worrying about missing a potential secret because they picked the wrong character."

The fact that Wonder came out a few months after the Mario Movie was genuinely brilliant synergy on Nintendo's part.

Dude you have to make a Super Mario 64 Revisited episode, so many beta assets were uncovered in the gigaleak, and so many more things were discovered about Super Mario 64's beta. I'd love to see all these leaked facts in a Beta64 episode! Right now they're just all over the place in the internet.

My theory about the weird gemstones in the prototype is that when a Wonder Effect is active in the final game, the purple coins you collect become segments (so instead of being worth one coin, they're only worth .1 coins, but there's way more of them present in the stage).
So maybe originally those segmented coins were supposed to be a separate collectable, ie, the gemstones?

I really liked the little "reveal to release" recap at the end. I hope you include it in future videos

I'm so glad that the devs were able to put any crazy and wacky ideas that they could into this game.

6:50 The bit about the original SMB being full of hidden suprises unlocked some memories. "When I press down on some pipes, Mario goes underground! Wow Mario is swimming in the water now ... ok I don't like that."

I remember in my old Mario Maker Levels, of someone managed to jump over the flagpole, I’d add a hidden block with a Shaun the Sheep Mystery Shroom inside as a fun bonus for people who skipped the goal.

Dude I didn’t even realize that there was a guy saying “Wondaaar” in the Wonder Transformations. Learn something new everyday

Mario wonder was a classic before it even came out. This is just one of those era defining games that will never be forgotten

oh i love how this paints such a clear picture of how the game dev process went and how all o fthese seemingly random ideas in the final game just came about because of so much brainstorming and messing around during development. thats really cool
