Could never happen today the ethos of International football of Nation vs Nation has been destroyed. What great memories these games bring back and what fantastic players they all were.
I went to the same school as Keith Weller, he was in the year below, but we were close friends. He trialed with Arsenal first of all, but wasn't taken on and shortly after he went to Millwall then Spurs and eventually Chelsea then ending up at Leicester where in one cold, cold match he wore a pair of tights in the match! He moved to the States and played there and retired staying to live in the US. Sadly, he died in Seattle at the age of 58.
Basically these games were 'friendlies' and most of the players were friends with each other but there was no love lost on the pitch once the whistle blew. Hell of a generation of Scottish players there who were generally let down by just being two or three players short in key positions. Goalkeepers and defenders in particular. I loved those hexagonal panelled black and white footballs though,a classic design.
Joe Mercer was the 'interim' England Manager before Don Revie took over. He picked a 'flair' team in reaction to the so-called 'dour' Sir Alf Ramsey years. The latter is much-maligned as a Manager and Coach - but he should be remembered as a great tactician and innovator who won the World Cup in 1966 and produced probably England's best-ever side at the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico.
