Classic British color TV has always amazed me. They went from 405 monochrome to a crystal clear 625 UHF PAL system virtually overnight in 1967 (the year I was born) although, admittedly, it had a pretty long national rollout time. I mean, that's like going from a 707 to Concorde! Sure, we had NTSC 480 (visible) color a fairly long time before that with a pretty decent frame rate, but the color control was truly appalling and - think about this - it was not really improved on at system level until 1998 when standardized HD broadcast systems were introduced! PAL was still the world leader until then!
Now, of course, we're the same everywhere, so there's no more rivalry. I kind of miss that ;)
Great video, by the way! Love these old soccer matches, for I grew up in England in the 1970s and 80s don'tcha know!
I have said this on other posts ... This was outdated even then !
The European Championships (originally The European Nations Cup) had the first Finals in 1960 with qualifying from 1958. That had far more prestige than The British Championship or Home Internationals!
I know England had automatic qualification to the 1970 World Cup Final as previouse winners
After 1970 England had to Qualify for the World Cup Finals again, and those qualifying matches had Far More Inportance than The Home Internationals!
Just think for a moment ... Without that outdated silly inward cosy interplay, England and Scotland Wales (I could not give a dam about six Counties in Ireland) would have had more time and focus on the Euro's and World Cup games!.
Every Now and Then we could have played each-other ... Well we did that from 1984!.
Typical April pitch, plenty of dried mud, rock hard, and usually made worse by windy conditions. Powerful looking England team, but they struggled here.
The hand of God was obviously around before Maradona's days (2.17).🤣🤣 Ps: the Welsh goal was most certainly offside. Those progeams would have been so much better without Jimmy Hill's pontificating.
