Everytime I have been out of work i have volunteered at one of these.   Gives you somthing to do, keeps you feeling useful and looks better  to potential employers. Met my wife in one, she was doing the same.

Never worked in one for more than a few weeks tho, I usually get work pretty quick

All the charity shops in my area only accept clean clothes, so Febreze isn't needed.

I bought a box of books from a charity shop. Inside was a pocket sized copy of the néw testament bound in leather. It was made to fit in the top pocket of a military tunic. The inscription written in beautiful copperplate said to private p Sanderson on your joining the regiment in France. God bless from your brother Cpl J Sanderson . Royal Suffolk regiment . Ypres 1915.
I cried for a long time . I hope they both survived

I love a good mooch around charity shops. Most of my books and a good deal of my wardrobe (and some of my furniture) came from one or another and I am proud rather than ashamed of this. I also donate quite a bit; to my mind I'm saving stuff from ending up in landfill, supporting a charity and also the customers who, like me, can't afford to buy new. I've found some really good bargains, and I don't know how I would have managed without them when my kids were growing up. Especially when my boys were in their teens and growing like weeds.

I love charity shops. You can find some real gems sometimes. And it's all supporting a good cause. Win-win.

All the snobs who sneer at charity shops, they always make sure the goods on sale is clean and in good condition, and I get nearly all my books from them

It doesn't still effect our food now, but foreigners still think it does, it is just a reputation that is left over from rationing.

My wife died last year, just in her 50s, and I am surprised how many clothes that I took to the animal charity shop, that she still hadn't even taken out of the packaging.

i have bought a couple of coats which i love, i donated a dress i had bought and decided i didnt like it, instead of returning it, i donated it with the tags still on it.

I always donate to my local hospice charity shop. I’m completely fine with    them selling the items on, just as long as the hospice makes some money.
Also, J, you know Joe Wilkinson from that Waitrose Christmas ad with Keira Knightley. He plays Phil Phil ,her love interest where he meets her at the cheese counter .

Where ever we went in the UK on holiday , my late wife would always check out the local charity shops.
You used to be able to get a real bargain. Not so much now.
Some are actually closing down. Our OXFAM, RSPCA and SCOPE closed down a few years ago.
I can't believe that scumbags steal stuff from charity shops. I caught a guy stealing a coat. He put it on and walked out of the shop. Some of us stopped him. He said it was his coat. When the police arrived it still had the charity shop tag on it !!
Usually, only the shop manager gets paid.

I worked in a well known charity shop, company policy was that we were not allowed to advertise items online.

My son is out at the moment ... volunteering working in a charity shop!  I have to show him this video when he gets back!

My wife and I both give to and buy clothes if we see something nice. Loads of teddies so the dog always gets a toy with no Pet Shop premium😂

not all charity shops are equal , but there are some corkers , especially around the rich neighbourhoods .

British charity stores are very much like the ones here in New Zealand. Wandering around the local Hospice shop, SPCA shop, Red Cross shop, or Salvation Army shop is a good way to spend half an hour. Picked up an old CD player for $12 (about $8 US) last week. And if you buy something there, you know that at least some of the money is going to a good cause. The one time I got an expensive item cheaply (a painting by a local artist) I went back later and gave them some extra money.

All charity shops have 90% women's clothing and in the tiny 10% mens section which is mainly "dead mans trousers".  There is always an old lady in any given mens section very slowly looking at it which means that any men who come in to the shop can't get to the area.

You can't beat a really good charity shop. I get most of my books from them, and because my interior decor has more than a nod to mid century vibes, I have picked up a number of vintage glass and ornaments from different charity shops. Plus we have quite a few items of clothing that came from there too. I also have an old wooden TV unit as one of my living room side tables that came from a charity shop.
Charity shops are usually managed by a paid member of staff, but the rest of the 'staff' at the shop are volunteers. My daughter volunteered at one of our local ones for a couple of years when she was about 16. She started because she could count it towards the 'community service ' element of her Duke of Edinburgh award, which is a personal development programme for teenagers covering a number of different types of activity) but carried on after that was done and dusted.
Whilst there may be issues around donations and money - the alternative is landfill, and who needs more of that? Although local people in need can benefit from buying cheap stuff - a lot of shops sell second hand school uniform for local schools, for instance - the main intention behind them is to raise money for the charity (each shop is run by a specific individual charity, be it a local hospice, Age Concern, cancer charities etc) and so selling appropriate items online for the best price is the right thing to do.

I used to volunteer at a charity shop.  It was fun

When I was a teenager I volunteered in the local Help the Aged charity shop for a while.  One time someone left a couple of black sacks outside and popped in for 2 seconds to say he had to go but that the bags outside were clothing donations.  They were full of very dusty work gloves - they looked like they'd been used with asbestos then dumped to avoid a disposal charge.
