Let's check out the fascinating connection between an English folktale and the gods worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons.

Slough rhymes with “Ow!” As in John Betjeman’s poem: Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now, There isn't grass to graze a cow.

Folklore you can’t beat it. And the British countryside is full of it. Great video mate 🇬🇧

"Antlers = sexy look". Drusilla thought so and broke poor Spike's heart 😁

you were looking up about Richard II, but the once who was around when the little princes disappeared was Richard III, at the end of the Wars of the Roses period.

Yes, Slough rhymes with Cow. Friar Park is in Henley, which is in Oxfordshire. As a youngster, I was a Milkman in Henley and I delivered Milk to the Gatehouse at Friar Park (probably for the security). Never saw George though. As a child in a village 7 miles from Henley, my mate & I used to cycle to Windsor Castle through the back roads often during the Summer Holidays.

Herne the Hunter, the mystical guide and mentor in the ITV 1980s series Robin of Sherwood (I think he wore more of the stag than the antlers!)

I immediately heard Ghost Riders in the Sky when the Wild Hunt arrived...

The story of the headless hunter was first popularised in America by Washington Irving's 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow', but originates in Europe and is part of the Wild Hunt folklore.

Game Of Thrones borrowed heavily from Anglo Saxon and medieval history and folklore. Herne popped up a couple of times. The Baratheons wore the antler crown and a helmet with antlers in battle. Also there was the ceremony where a horse was used to try to reanimate the dude Jason Momoa played (forgot his name!) It was always interesting trying to spot the references 🙂

I remember Herne the Hunter being portrayed in a very mystical way in the 19080s Richard Carpenter series Robin of Sherwood. It's a great piece of television with Robin Hood being played at first by actor Michael Praed, who later went on to work in the US TV soap Dynasty, and then Jason Connery, son of the great Sean Connery, and well worth a watch, even today.

Old song: Ghost riders in the sky. Also there is the Greek/Romano tradition of Diana & the sacred hunt. Druids had their sacred groves. The Bacchantes followed Bacchus in a wild hunt. Witches & wizards were said to fly through the air to their celebrations. Shamans all over the world tended to masquerade as animal spirits. Some version of these ideas seem to be common everywhere.

I have not heard this story before. I did know about the tale of the Headless Huntsman though. It's another very old European Myth AND I enjoyed watching Johnny Depp in the movie 'Sleepy Hollow' - great stuff. Love your Channel JJ. You put a lot of work into it - and it shows. All the best

The name of Herne already pictured him with antlers in my head before I heard the rest of this tale. I thought the origin was older than that, dating from before the Vikings at least.
