A sad anniversary is being commemorated these days, marking its 40th year: the tragic plane crash of racing driver Harald Ertl.
"Like a star falling from the sky," is how Rainer Braun described this tragedy just days before Easter weekend.
His driving talent, coupled with exceptional negotiating skills in securing sponsors, propelled him from Super V, Formula 3, and Formula 2 to the pinnacle of motorsport. Ertl was also part of the starting grid in the tragic Formula 1 race at the Nürburgring in 1976, in which Niki Lauda narrowly survived his fiery crash. Ertl initially crashed his Hesketh into the burning Ferrari, and then it was he who operated the only available fire extinguisher so that Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger, and Guy Edwards could pull Lauda from the cockpit. After his big breakthrough in Formula 1 failed to materialize and the financial burden became increasingly burdensome, Ertl switched to touring cars and found his true calling.
Rainer Braun remembers this remarkable and far too short career and the likeable racer with his distinctive beard.
