Before diesel conquered heavy industry, there was the hot-bulb engine — a massive, slow-turning machine that had to be heated with an external flame before it could even start.

In this video, we trace the full history of the hot-bulb engine, from Herbert Akroyd Stuart and the early Hornsby-Akroyd engines to the legendary Lanz Bulldog tractors and the fishing boats that depended on them. These machines could burn heavy fuel, eliminate the boiler and water demands of steam, and survive brutal working conditions with surprisingly simple engineering.

But the same red-hot chamber that made the engine possible also created its biggest weakness. Too cold and it would not fire properly. Too hot and ignition could happen too early, causing violent pounding, runaway conditions, and potentially catastrophic mechanical failure.

This is the story of the strange machine that helped replace steam — before diesel eventually replaced it.
