I had the honour to meet Chris Yates at his book signing in Great Torrington in Devon during the 90’s (just a small town then) I informed him that I was a fellow carp angler in the Forces. On signing his book I bought from him, he drew a picture in the front cover for me. In my eyes it’s a one of one book with the added personally drawn picture. It’s a fantastic read. So much respect for the great man. I still have the book to this day and it’s still in impeccable condition. One of life’s treasures.

Put a rod in his hand and Chris is a 13 year old lad again, his love and enthusiasm for fishing is still as strong as ever, cheers Peter.

‘Had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Yates when we were filming a BBC sequence where it appeared he was shooting a bait boat. I supplied the shotgun barrels and smoke effect. Happy days.

They really were mythical beasts back in the day. I remember the first time I saw an angler land a 20+ carp on the other side of the pond. All us kids ran around there to have a look at it before it was released. Been hooked ever since.

Chris evokes fishing of yesteryear like no-one else. His old gear, his whole approach to the art of angling is simplicity and child like wonder. Wonderful stuff!

He's such a legend, how he's able to so perfectly capture and put across the feelings and emotions we all had as youngters is incredible. And i think he's 100% right in that angler should start with float fishing, and then add in a ledger rod and work your way up. It really adds to the appreciation of the sport and the fish imo.
Back in the 80s and 90s carp were still that mythical beast lurking in the depths that if you were lucky you may catch a glimpse of, or for those lucky few catch.
God i miss those days.
