On Number 2 - I once had a loud older guy walk up to one of my paintings and say - "who would want THAT on their wall?" His daughter was with him and said "DAD shhhh. i'm sure someone will like it!" She was right. It sold a week later to a woman who said- "this is so beautiful, I'm going to treat myself!" (i scored a 9)

I'm a writer, independently published, and know my marketing. Art is my avocation, my relaxation and gives me both frustration and joy. I'm still struggling with style and consistency, and scored very low on your quiz, Julia, but when I do think I'm ready, at least I can most likely advertise on Facebook successfully. I bet most of your followers find it's the other way around for them! But, to those who don't know marketing yet, it's just a skill that can be learned even if the thought is scary. It's just a skill (and I learned it after I retired). Getting the right kind of consistency in my paintings, for me, is a much harder nut to crack.

Hi Julia. I’m a 68 year old new to painting and I adore your work and videos. I don’t know if this will be of help to anyone but I’ve been trying a lot of acrylic paints the past 2 years and I’ve found one really good paint at good prices. It’s Meeden paints, heave body, and they are more than comparable to Liquitex. I actually prefer them to Golden. Though I use both, I’ve been given Golden for gifts but I buy Meeden. Just a thought, looking forward to your fall videos. ❤

Thank you for this, it gave me a boost! I scored around 8-9 out of ten. Where I am not sure is removed my name and be picked and my pricing… such a challenge. I did put my prices up this summer and I am selling. I have been told by more experienced artists that my prices are too low so maybe I am getting close to be comparable to others ? I am having a great summer with my art. Best selling yet! I live on the east coast in a very touristy area. I paint a lot of seascapes and flowers, often combining the two. I love painting these subjects. I had two collectors that got emotional when they saw my work, one was in tears! I was there working at the time, working in a coop market for artists in my area. Such a rewarding experience…. Both collectors bought 3 paintings! For social media, I seem to get more views in Facebook, I have a lot more followers. Not the case with Instagram? I may need to consider your course!

Your questions are right on. They are very good you know what you are talking about. I particularly noticed your work and I liked it very much. I am an artist and a musician. And when I was young I started painting in school and picked it back up about 25 and continued. The only thing I didn't know was marketing. I started playing in a group so I put down the brush and picked up the guitar for many years. But as far as my art back then people wanted my work. Everybody knew my paintings were mine when they saw them for the first time. I have decided to learn more about marketing now that I want to get back into it. Which I have done. For the past 2 years. I am a 3D artist too. My score is 10 out of 10. Everything I did back then sold. I had a neighbor across the street from where I lived. Who paid me to paint pictures when I was out of work. He sold them all at a lawn sale. When I joined a band people in the van were buying paintings from me. I had a big picture on the wall that I painted that I sold to my landlord for the rent because I lost my factory job. He seemed concerned so I asked him what was wrong he said my wife is going to kill me. I asked why he replied because I lost my job too!

9/10 because i sold mostly to people I know, and I want to sell to people who do not know me, to actually grow an audience that is currently made of 75% by people i know! 😂 Marketing is my weakness!

This video was wonderful, I learned a lot about myself as an artist and just wanted to thank you for your time sharing such valuable information in getting to the main point of what do I really want in my life as an artist. I'm in my early eighties and having fun teaching art in a community center. Doing shows is harder now, but I may get the courage to do your online square painting show someday. Love you and your paintings!

Hi Julia, Just wondering if you are up for a challenge that would also make a great video. I am thinking there are enough people who love watching your videos, that don’t have money to paint with the really good quality paint(me as one of those people 😂) So I think it would be a neat video, if you did a painting using supplies from the dollar store to paint one of your beautiful tree landscapes. What do you think? Could be a fun escape from the every day hustle and bustle:) 😊
