Taylor Swift built an empire on the performance of girlhood. In this video essay, I unpack how pop culture, white femininity, and fame turn growing up into an impossible act. A feminist analysis of Taylor Swift, the politics of “relatability,” and the tragedy of eternal girlhood.

The fact that Adele wrote a beautiful mature album at 21 is crazy. She’s close in age to Taylor but she’s always written and sounded much more mature.

she's the most successful marketing manager to ever hold a guitar

I was really hoping Life of a Showgirl would be about how exhausting the performance is. How difficult it was to do the Eras tour and put on a smile even when you're drained. Missed opportunity

Let's just call it what it is... Taylor Swift is the Disney Adult of pop music.

I dont think you can call yourself an "English teacher" and not expect people to dissect your lyrics. If she really is as intelligent as her fans say she should know how these lyrics were going to be received. Also, ive been giving her the side eye since her conveniently timed friendship with ice spice.

She's also "the machine" now cause shes a billionaire. You are no longer margenalized or penalized for who you are in any way anymore. You are an insanely powerful person at that point

The English teacher shtick is so grating. A billionaire cosplaying as one of the most devalued professions while misinterpreting a very obvious message from Shakespeare? One of her more minor crimes, for sure, but still eye-roll inducing.

Kate Bush leaned into being middle aged and her art matured with her. Kate Bush could do Shake it Off but Taylor Swift could NEVER do This Woman's Work

she thinks Ophelia lived in a tower. and calls herself an english teacher.

Taylor Swift would fail the Bechdel test

What's funny to me is I feel like "Actually Romantic" has the opposite effect that I assume she was going for. The lyrics have this "you're clearly obsessed with me, how cute" vibe- but really, the fact that she took the time to write a whole song about it shows that SHE is the one who cares and Charlie is living in her head rent free.

White house also used Olivia Rodrigo's All American B- and she got it removed asaappp

Florence + the Machine’s Everybody Scream came out 2 weeks after Showgirl, and there’s decades of maturity between them. Florence’s album sounds like music by a 39 year old adult woman, Taylor’s sounds like it’s written by a teen even tho she’s only about 3-4 years younger than Florence.

"Arrested development disguised as self re-invention" is THE perfect way to describe what's going on here. Very well said!

So just so everyone's aware, onyx is a natural gemstone, opalite is an artificial glass. Not only is opalite not a gemstone, it's also not natural.

i would like to note that every single one of taylor’s albums has some reference to being a teenager or a student whether it’s from her own perspective or that of a character. that’s something of a given through the first three albums, and even in some of her later songs it can be fun, but it really grates in songs like miss americana, so high school, thank you aimee, and ruin the friendship. i don’t want to hear a woman in her 30s singing about high school drama or the thrill of a first boyfriend

I rememeber someone on Tiktok saying how this album is how TS has always sounded to non-Swifties. And its true. Her music was always shallow and simplistic and her image has been inauthentic from day 1. There are no ethical billionaires, and she's no different.

@goosefoot32 10 months ago

the reason we haven’t seen a “mature grown” Taylor album, is bc there’s no mature grown Taylor.

@austincollier5335 10 months ago

my mind just goes to the aretha franklin interview where the first thing she can think of to say about taylor was, "gowns, beautiful gowns." that really sums her up as an artist, and now it's just too obvious to ignore
