I do a similar trick. But instead of envisioning myself as a machine. I imagine that what I’m tracking is basically for the next album of whatever my favorite band is at the time. That Jari from Wintersun is in the studio with me and I’m tracking the guitars for him. I realize how unrealistic that is, Jari is light years ahead of me. But there’s a focus I achieve when I do that. It’s interesting.
Josh is probably the only professional guitarist i would feel confident in buying guitar lesson packages from. An older video of his where he details his approach to developing technique and guitar practice is what really helped me break past a few barriers so far Also in a more structured video like this , Josh has gotten really good at articulating his points, very easy to understand!
Not pretentious at all! The visualization process was taken very seriously and taught to those of us who went to college for music. It works! For everything, because how we play the guitar is how we live our lives. Good topic.
I use to sleep to justice cranked up. Played the hell out of that album. I played drums back then . My drums got washed away in a big flood back in 97 so I switched to guitar. I was 18 when that happened. Still love the Justice album . Your right tho when I record I think the same way . Turn into a beast machine .
That's awesome that you brought up the technique where you imagine being a piano. Nearly every day of the last two years my vocal warmup has been your whole album A Sign Of Things To Come. About a year into this I realized it's a lot easier to imagine being a trumpet for many of these songs. EG - for the chorus of the song ASOTTC there's a very short prime before each vocal line. You load your voice up like a trumpet player gathers pressure to get that compression. It's vital, but it's not something I noticed right away. It's really cool hearing you confirm this ideology.
This works! I just tried this tonight for improvising lead and somehow I was playing way better. I think it gives you confidence. Brilliant advice! 👏🏻👍🏻
Mate I really appreciate you talking about this, I know it feels a bit like "the woo" talking about this stuff but that consciousness/confidence/headspace combination that results in these kind of "locked in" states are REAL as fuck, absolutely factual phenomenon and it should be talked about more.
HUGE AJFA fan here! but,...Heathen, 1991 album, "Victims of Deception" somehow went under the radar...well worth referencing. insane legit rhythm guitar !
