While devoid of Katniss Everdeen, the Patriot Games has plenty of the dystopian, propagandistic, unbalanced slop that the Capitol was feeding the citizens of Panem. One boy and one girl from every state vie for a scholarship prize handed to them by Donald Trump in this nationally televised spectacle. For the winner? Glory on ESPN 2 and a college education. For the losers? Well, you'll just have to watch.

Wait the competition of kids competing to win 1 scholarship cost 13million to run??? they COULD HAVE SENT ALL 60 KIDS TO COLLEGE FOR THAT! That's 200k each scholarships with a little left over to cover any administration fees!

0:10 fun fact, that WAS the state of the hunger games until its tenth year. they didn’t begin with all the open space and theatrics, so the first nine ended quickly and brutally. most citizens, even in the capitol, didn’t care to watch until snow began adding things like betting, and gaul added sponsors for each tribute and interviews with them all beforehand. this is literally the real life economic equivalent of the beginning of the in-universe hunger games.

Fun fact.. this event took place in my home town. If there's one thing you need to know about spire institute, its that it's essentially a tax evasion fraud front that spent years in debt, did not deliver on most of it's promises as a sports facility, and then got sold off to someone who will continue to use it as a tax evasion fraud front

I cackled like an anime villain right before the hero's power up when I heard the winner was going for a degree in Dance. Only way it could have been better is if he was majoring in Gender Studies with a minor in African History.

TBH, I feel like if the US did a version of THG, it won't go as the novels described but more like the way of Stephen King's 'The Long Walk'. No fancy combat, no sponsors, just people in destitute desperate/delusional enough to put their lives on the line for a dream they'll most likely never live to see. Two winners will never be considered.

At least 68m dollars of taxpayer money went into this event to give two kids 125k scholarships each.
Where in the HELL did that 68m (or more) go???
That shit could've paid for 544 scholarships, but we got the pigslop games instead.

One thing about the kid whose family lives in a van and moves every couple weeks.

That’s a super common tactic from abus1ve parents to keep their actions secret. It’s also really common for abus1ve parents to homeschool their kids for the exact same reason.

It keeps them away from teachers.

Teachers are mandatory reporters, and it’s really hard to report someone that lives on the move and never has the same address for long, let alone someone who never sees a teacher in the first place.

I fear how many of the kids in these games are being actively hurt by their parents.

Cause the numbers say it’s a substantial chunk of them.

One of the very few non white kids played for Guam even though he doesn’t live in Guam and hasn’t lived in Guam. His dad is white and his mom is from Guam so that was enough for him to play for Guam. And yes, they are Christian homeschoolers. Just like most of these kids.

Not just win scholarship money or lose your chance at attending college. There's the third option of still going to college but collecting debt that will outlive you!

i am not entirely surprised that the girl team got along better than the boy team. a lot of them probably desperately wanted a friend, but also woman athletes are usually very supportive of each other. men get too into their heads about competition and superiority, while the women are all under the same system of underfunding and under-promotion, so they know sticking together is something they need to do to stay safe. now do all woman athletes get along? god no, but a lot of them are at least friendly with each other, the ones who aren’t usually being the ones that stand out. even athletes who do pre-game shittalking still support each other, because they still respect each other on a basic level.
