The point of the environmental ai problem is to stop it before it gets worse, not wait till the problem is damn near irreversible and try to do something about it

@jaymuldoon4910 2 months ago

Personally i like when you get really into the topic and stray off a bit it makes it alot more intimate as an audience to see your emotions and how interested you really are

34:43 but thats how these issues got so bad. "We have bigger fish to fry we'll deal with it later" is the perfect way to create an awful industry. Look at tech, we weren't on top of the legal framework and now look at it.

I feel like Julia is seeing the environmental impact of AI as a somewhat abstract issue, like "oh its using water", not "its directly impacting on the lives and health of many people around the world who live near data centres" and IMO thats really short-sighted for someone who works in environmental crime.

I think cracking down on environmental crimes and crimes of large industries/businesses in general is the greatest failure of our modern society. There is no regulation, there is no enforcement and there is no incentive to do the right thing.

I genuinely do not believe there is a civil way to get these corporations to do the right thing, because the ones in power (the ones that should restrict their exploitation), are easily influenced, they are corrupt. Money rules the world.

I'm sorry but entire communities do not have drinking water. It absolutely IS a main issue. RIGHT NOW.

@L3ased 2 months ago

ai is absolutely as pressing as any other environmental crime. the communities where these data centers are being built are absolutely worthy of being fought for, now. how can you say its a back burner issue when the data centers aren't even built yet? should we just allow them to come into our communities and take the last of the few resources we have left? we've existed thousands of years without ai. lets not kid ourselves that its fine.

It's kind of bizarre to think AI is "making us do things, that we were just never able to do" because for it to learn, you literally have to feed it data of things humans have already done... especially with generative AI and uses in creative fields.... what a bizarre take.

@gio605 2 months ago

tommy you NEED a fact checking bubble text that appears when the guest states something untrue (for example: there's more than 1 women prison in the uk...)

@williamutting6042 2 months ago

I like the environmental crimes section. But the "temporary" power stations that AI uses that bypass emission laws isn't really touched on. I don't mind the idea of AI, but it should be regulated to research and educational purposes. companies pushing it as mandatory to the public is a bit fucked

Discussing whether people are born evil. Through my study of history i've learned that each of us, no matter how good we think we are, are only a few bad situations from becoming an absolute monster. Reading and seeing all the horrific things that good people can do to each other is really confronting because then you know that you are no different, you arent special. There's an evil in all of us just looking for a way out and its better to know and recognise that than pretend it doesnt exist.

We need to get Hannah Fry on for more discussion about science and ai, she's also iconic

It was interesting to hear her advice about how to 'not be anxious' (for lack of better terms.) When my child was 7, he was really anxious. We put him in therapy. The therapist had us do a ritual every night with him: imagine a fear, now ask "What's the worst thing that could happen?" Let him go down that road. Then end it with saying, basically, "And yet, we will still be here, your bed will still be here, your dog and friends will still be here." It was really helpful for him because it allowed him to put things in perspective.

I feel like she's very intelligent, however overly optimistic and slightly naive when it comes to AI. Also she seems to favor certain looks on things that are skewed however she is aware.

Honestly I often don't like the able argument for ai. So one that argues that it will eventually lead to good or that we'll be able to do much more with it. I think it avoids the moral question of the theft of deta that people generally like to avoid. Like oh it exists so we'll quickly move on from how it came to be.
I frankly don't like that at all.

@brendanbirdfield1284 2 months ago

I think Tommy might be in the wrong line of work if he doesn't like existential questions.

@HopefulBrush20 2 months ago

32:51 I think one moral issue with AI is this push for the ‘perfect thing’ (interview, answer, schedule, educational plan etc). And the push to use it in everything is cancelling out the right of the interviewee to chose how it may be used and affect their case. AI has been shown to have certain biases and does nothing to bring equality to the criminal investigation process when it comes to biases towards underrepresented groups.

I studied psychology at university and I remember one lecturer/teacher demonstrating how unreliable lie detectors are by asking for a volunteer. And then he just looked at him and asked him if he’d gone to the university club recently, the student said “yes- last Friday” so the lecturer just looked at him and said “last Friday night” and the lie detector JUMPED!- and he hadn’t even asked him a question lol
