This is a new series with Sana Qadar about criminal psychology. As you might have guessed, this video contains some heavy themes including sexual abuse. It also contains the names of Aboriginal people who have died. Please seek support with Lifeline 13 11 14 or 1800 RESPECT.

I'd like to see the question flipped. Why did the number of serial killers 'explode' in the first place

@angels0auras 3 months ago

Potential serial killers exist except they're now being caught on their 1st body

Serial killing? In this economy? Who had that kind of time?

@chilldrakaina 6 months ago

I think it has something to do with how the style of serial killing has changed. We're seeing less of the serial killers who kidnap and slowly torture victims due to their own thrill and fantasies, but more of mass shootings and killing quickly on large scales

I bet the reason that the rate of serial killers has gone down would be discovered by first finding out why the rate went up for a time.

@orbweaver9750 6 months ago

I believe part of the reason the rate has gone down is that law enforcement has gotten better at not giving information to the news that would result in the serial killer becoming sensationalized, which is what many of them seem to want. So while we may have less serial killers, we are also giving the ones that exist less public attention.

In Washington state in the US. In the Seattle metro area we had the green river killer. He dumped the bodies of his victims along the green river. One day a while back.they finally caught the monster. I found this out when my wife made some panicked noises. I ran over to her where she was trembling on the couch watching the news. They were announcing the capture of the killer and had a photo of him. I was able to calm my wife and she told me she recognized him. As a tEnn, walking home from school a stranger had pulled over and offered to.give her a ride home. She thankfully knew something was wrong, panicked and raced home. She was one that got away.

The serial killer killer is killing all of them

0:22 Funny enough, when I was a teenager, they found a serial killer in my neighborhood -- The Cleveland Strangler. However, because the disappearances had never been linked to deaths or even each other, we weren't warned.

I think serial killers "migrated" to mass shooters. Alienated guys, with little or no empathy are no longer killing sporadically. Now they grab an AR15 and kill 20 people at one time

@iLOVEpicklesBRO28 6 months ago

Hot take, it's not because they don't have drive- they're just changing tactics. Who used to be serial killers are now mass shooters.

I always thought ww2 might have had a big impact, lots of people having kids after the war, with sever ptsd, violent outbursts towards their children and suppressed emotions due to the time. It sort of aligns with the timeline where 20-30 years after the war, a big rise in serial killers appeared.

@thatsnotmyname-t4z 6 months ago

In the last 3-5 years I heard the FBI say that there were an estimated 200+ serial killers active in the US and they speculated it was actually a higher number.

@kentallard8852 7 months ago

An example of how serial killers can avoid detection if their victims aren't fashionable would be Robert Pickton in Canada. He killed 50+ women, predominately indigenous, homeless/drug addicted/prostitutes - for years the Mounties paid no attention to the missing persons reports.

@electragoob 6 months ago

I’d argue that the number of serial killers hasn’t necessarily gone down. They just get caught before they go serial. Though the number of un-investigated disappearances of High Risk victims would be an interesting source of information.

Why go into murders and executions when you can go into mergers and acquisitions.

@cowsgomooatme4845 6 months ago

I'm not sure I'm convinced, serial killers have been with us since at least ancient Greece and Rome. Probably all the way back to the Sumerians. I think it's just that it's so much more difficult to get away with it in the modern world, so they get caught and dealt with before they are "serial".
