"If you do this, it will kill him."

"I was already doing it, you don’t need to sell it to me."

The typical troll cycle
1. "LOL LOL LOL U MAD"
2. >somebody inevitably gets pissed off and retaliates
3."bro wtf i was just joking cmon ehy are you so mean"

Half the horror story here is just spineless DMing. It sounded like the DM just bent over at EVERY demand Troll made.

I swear half these stories would end at a paragraph if literally anyone at the table spoke up. "sorry, I was under the impression this was a serious campaign". "Hey I'm uncomfortable with that even if you are joking I don't think we should have to listen to that". "Hey DM, I feel you're stepping on my toes with retconning my backstory can we talk about this"

How does a player say to the rest of the party “if you don’t kill me, you, and everyone else in this world will die” and get surprised when someone kills him?

If you keep trying to disrupt the game for your own amusement, don't be surprised if one of the other players goes from zero to "HULK SMASH!" in a matter of seconds.

"He was playing a character with self-awareness issues." No, he wasn't. It's not that deep. He was being an asshole and deliberately attempting to derail and undermine everything.

"What would my character do?" is a valid question. But if the answer is, "ruin everyone's fun," then you need to rewrite your character. Doing things that are detrimental to the party and their progression can be a good idea if all of the players agree to it. The moment it goes from "the characters are annoyed, but the players are into it," to "now the players just hate it," you've crossed the line.

"He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy." Yondu Udonta

"By eating that disc, you intentionally put the world in jeopardy.  I am merely upholding my duty."

"Also, you're not my dad. My dad's a baker who's married to a potato farmer."

Troll: “I kill the merchant.”
Dm: * snickers *
Dm: “that merchant is actually a level five sorcerer, so you’ve chosen death.”

The fact that the GM allowed this to continue for so long is the real crime.

16:53 oh yeah "for some reason", its not like he rewrote someone's backstory without telling them, and tried throwing the campaign by eating the essential item that is needed to move forward. But sure let's go with" no reason".

Troll eats Compass.
Me: Well, that went South quickly.

I play as an old man monk myself whose name is “Hank Hilbert”. His Flurry of Blows is renamed “Old Man Kung Fu” and all the characters in his backstory are named after King of the Hill characters to some degree

He’s no-nonsense hero of his town that holds monumental grief on his shoulders for the loss of his adventuring party due to an accident he believed he caused while his own BBEG back in the day, so he never returned after the battle and instead hid away to escape the guilt.

Troll brings shame upon old man monk characters everywhere

I think the only thing OP should've also brought up in character is that Troll, by swallowing the drive, did just threaten their entire world's existence. Cause even if it came out the other end it doesn't necessarily mean it's functional. So in a way he did sacrifice Troll to save the world cause Troll did something stupid

It would have been amazing if the GMs "plot twist" was that the Troll was just delusional and thought incorrectly that he was the father.

Not going to lie, but i feel like OP shouldve told the group what happened after their private session. Like yeah, no wonder the table's mood was dampened after you killed him, you didnt explain
