Nobody in local govt is prepared or qualified to inspect RAAC and judge whether it can be reasonably replaced so 500 houses in Aberdeen and more elsewhere will be bulldozed rather than fitted with replacement roofs. For the ridiculous demolition fee of £4m they could all have new roofs fitted and probably double glazing, insulation and heatpumps inclusive, yet the wrecking ball is easier. The fact hundreds of people have had their lives upended indefinitely with concomitant stress and illness is of no import to the average councillor as the taxpayer will pick up the tab.

Right now german public insurance is in rough financial shape and the govt is pressuring to cut expenses. One target is psychotherapy: Wait-times are already 3-6 months and by making more therapists jobs unviable that will increase. Delays worsen outcomes so it takes more time to resolve the given issues, and a notable fraction of patients will have to use clinics instead. The cuts are expected to increase costs for mental healthcare by 3-5x. This does not account for economic damage from increased sick-leave.

Whenever I hear you talk about British austerity I feel like it's just built on examples like that. Spend money to make money? Nah. Save money to loose money.
