The non-nuclear component of geothermal isn't entirely residual heat. They call it "primordial heat" to differentiate it. It is energy from Earth's initial formation, but it wasn't all thermal energy. There is a substantial conversion of energy from phase change as molten material solidifies and expands the solid core, there is conversion of gravitational potential energy to thermal as denser material sinks and friction causes heating, there's conversion of Earth's rotational kinetic energy into the magnetic field through the dynamo effect, and then resistive heating within the Earth as the magnetic field induces currents in the ground. Thee are others too that are less substantial contributors.
