I own a business focused on boilers and I can tell you with extreme certainty that steam boilers are not going anywhere anytime soon. Hospitals use steam to sanitize everything, manufacturing uses steam for both the heat and pressure it can produce. The infrastructure around steam generation is vast and steam is a well understood medium that has incredible advantages over all other kinds of materials or sources.
Retired USN Enlisted Submariner, Naval Nuclear Power Program, 77 to 97. That was a very based and factual analysis. I agree that it's a long way between using a Supercritical CO2 system, for something like waste heat recovery at a steel plant with "conventional" heat sources, where any unanticipated problems and failures would have minimal impact by comparison - to doing the research and testing necessary, to arrive at a certifiable and licensable commercial reactor design, using said system on the secondary side of the house for power generation.
A gas pipeline company is doing something interesting with those supercritical turbines where they take the waste heat from the compressor station and use that to run the supercritical CO2 turbine. One advantage with these is they are very efficient and small so they can be put in areas where a regular steam turbine just wouldnt work.
Tyler, I’m so happy you already saw Antons video and made your own, I saw the video and facepalmed that I hadn’t thought of it before.. I even asked the stationary engineers on Facebook what they thought because I wanted to hear educated opinions on it. Thanks man!
