Broomhill with its fine architecture,  shops,  cafes,  restaurants is a quiet place to wander in.  But living there feels like a society of strangers.  Great video !

You are fantastic. Your love of Glasgow is so evident. I have liked and subscribed because yours are the most enjoyable and informative videos I have seen on Glasgow, a city I know but would like to know more about, with Hyndland (I've seen your video on that wonderful area) and now Broomhill (and the West End in particular) being of primary interest.
Sadly, the loss of those villas and replacing them with concrete high-rises is yet another glaring example of Glasgow City Hall ruining the city it should be protecting.
Hopefully more people - ideally in Glasgow - will appreciate their city more as a result of seeing your videos.

I lived on Marlborough Avenue when I was in my final year of study.
We often sat outside to study, and on more than one occasion,  the Bank of Scotland was robbed at gunpoint. The robbers literally ran past us with guns and balaclavas. They ditched the money and the gardens were all searched by police with dogs.
Dougie Vypond lives in Broomhill too.

Dear Elena. Thank you. I was born and brought up in the top flat of the tenement at the corner of Crow Road and Marlborough Avenue above a branch of the British Linien Bank (long gone). I went to the Lifeboys and then the Boys Brigade in Broomhill Church and played in Naseby Park when I was a lot younger. I had a friend who lived in the grand flats in Broomhill Drive, and another friend of mine lived in the same terrace as where John Brown lived. There were many more happy memories from your video, so thank you for a trip back in history.

The southside of glasgow is amazing 🎉

Thank you yet again for another first rate and, for me, deeply nostalgic video.  Repeating myself (with some extras) from a previous video, my maternal grand parents moved into 125 Broomhill Drive (you passed 117 in the video) in 1913 as newly weds.  I think the flats were new  (or almost new) at the time). This was a ground floor flat with a street door and a close door.  My Grandmother died c1950, before I was born although I remember my Grandfather well.  In 1954 (?) he, and my parents, elder brother and I moved to a flat above at 127.   We left Broomhill drive in 1957, ergo, my Grandfather had lived in the drive  for something like 44 years....  As a child I remember playing in the drive with the neighbours' children.   One thing I remember very clearly was the flight of steps up to each house and close in Inverclyde.  they were concrete slabs on cast iron supports.  They made a very musical  'clang' when you ran up and down.  Our house had a concrete flight - no 'clang'.

At that time, both Netherlea and Larkfield were standing.    I am 99.9% sure that Nertherlea was a private home, although I could not give you the name of the residents.  I hope this will come out in the comments.  I remember it for huge laurel bushes in the garden hiding it from the street and the magnificent curved glass windows.  On the other hand, I am (again 99.9%) sure that Larkfield  was some kind of hospital/convalescent (?) hospital.  Latterly it lay empty for some time.  There was a garage (coach house?) which made a first rate 'den' in which to play.

I remember being told about two famous people , for the time, with associations.  Sir Hugh Roberton, of Orpheus Choir fame: I do not think he lived in Broomhill Drive, but was seen regularly - do not know why.   Similarly a Mr McKechnie (sp.?) an early leading light in the BBC Radio (initially station '5SC') had associations.    I think he stayed in Broomhill drive (?).

Film Locations

Inverclyde was used a 'Taggart' location.  I seem to remember the person who stayed in Inverclyde was the victim of a murder involving a poisonous snake - others will have a clearer memory of this.

Also, a period piece set in 1905 New York (Boston?).  Broomhill drive is a location, suitably dressed down - minimal adjustment.  It is called 'The House of Mirth'.  Interestingly the Art Galleries, with steam generators, portrayed Grand Central Station (?).  One of the stars of the film was Gillian Anderson, of 'X Files' fame.  It is available on YouTube at:

Final repeat

After many years my parents returned to the area to a flat in Marlborough Avenue.  My mother took up where she left off.  Tragically this idyll lasted barely eight months before she died suddenly, too young at 64.  However, she had 'come home'.

Tip of an iceberg - I hope you have many comments  from people whose memories are more accurate and recent than mine.

I grew up in the area and remember the magnificent entrance to Victoria Park before the construction of the Clyde Tunnel cut through it. The area where the high-rise flats are was just a field then and I remember there being horses kept in it. I don't remember there being any villas at that time (early 60's). I also remember the pre-fabs where the "new" shops are on the opposite side of Broomhill Drive.

A lovely tour of the neighbourhood where I lived for a few years in the early 2000s. Particularly chuffed to learn that I lived next door to the home of John Brown (albeit some years after his passing).

I enjoyed this video. I was aware of Broomhill and felt it was overlooked too. Some of the buildings and architecture are simply stunning. People should take a walk and have a look. You will be surprised.

That was a brilliant wander down Broomhill. That’s where I grew up and my folks still live there. Appreciate that you take your time showing places and the explanations. Never knew John Brown lived on  Marlborough Ave! Me and my friends walked up and down that street going to school every day and passed by his house. Incredible to think he lived there. I agree about the loss of many of the old buildings. When you look back at how it was, it can be like another world, although at least much is still there. The mansions where the high flags are… very hard to find good photos of them as you say, but you can find a few aerial views of them and the area. Probably not part of Broomhill, but if you were to go down to the bottom of Broomhill Avenue and see the lane on the right, there used to a row of old townhouses that ran along the main road called “Clydeview”. They were stunning. This was when Broomhill Avenue ran all the way down to South St. I think. Was back home during summer there (I live abroad now), and alway feel at peace and happy there. Oh, and where Broomhill shopping centre is, that used to be a huge mansion or something like that. That expressway really did take a lot away, but I guess it’s part of our memories now.
