After 40 years listening U2 the emotions and feelings are so strong that tears come out for the joy and pleasure

U2 shows are STILL like going to church, brother.  Been to see them six times.  The warmth and the love in the place - whether Arena or even Stadium - is unbelievable.  Sometimes I think Bono cones on a little strong, but I can never fault an artist for using his fame to try to make good things happen for others.

You can check out any of their concert videos, even the more modern ones.  It’s crazy.

Hell, during the POPMart Tour in 1997, on Memorial Day weekend in DC at RFK Stadium, Bono waved an arm at the big crazy neon stage around him and said to us, “Irishmen come to America, and we drive around and see all this buildings that look so ugly during the day but oh so beautiful at night.  This—“ indicating the stage, “is our church, made up of little bits and pieces of America.  Let’s go to church!”  And the band started into “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

They’re still those guys.

It was such a spiritual experience attending a U2 concert. Great band.

Do U2 fans wish they were making these kind of powerful spiritual songs right now ?

Bono's wife Ali is famous in Ireland for her work with the disadvantaged. She set up a large organisation who bring thousands of children from chernoble nuclear disaster area to Ireland every summer, giving them foster homes and cancer treatment  away from the horror. She and Bono have spent millions and helped about a million kids over the years, since the disaster. Still going strong. They are Angels.

Silver And Gold, what a song...

Your discussion at the end of the video basically summarizes U2’s whole career perfectly and is actually a lyric from their song Rejoice: “I can’t change the world, but I can change the world in me.”

Unfortunately this album, despite it being successful commercially and critically, came out so hot off the heels of Joshua Tree that people just had enough of them being everywhere all the time. Looking back on it it’s a total powerhouse. Hawkmoon 269 and All I Want is You will be played at my wedding next year. Great stuff as always man, cheers!

Some of the songs are original to this album.  Specifically Heartland, Angel of Harlem, Love Rescue Me, When Love Comes To Town, All I Want Is You, God Pt. II, Hawkmoon 269, Desire, and Van Diemen’s Land.  Basically any studio cut on this record was new.

Additionally, some of the live cuts weren’t album cuts.  Silver and Gold, for instance, had a studio version for the Artists Against Apartheid project, and it appeared as a B-side on at least one of the Joshua Tree singles.

The album is sort of the soundtrack to the U2 movie, which was released by Paramount, and is also called “Rattle and Hum.”

The film was panned at the time, I think because it was misunderstood.  U2 had come up listening to punk rock and didn’t really appreciate pre-70’s music and especially anything outside of punk.  But by this point in their career their eyes had been opened and the concept behind “Rattle and Hum” was an Irish band exploring America and learning about the roots of Rock and Roll, hence kicking it with BB and Bob Dylan and writing about Billie Holliday.

Critics  at the time saw a band that had just broken through into the mainstream covering Beatles and Dylan, recording new music in Sun Records where Elvis and Johnny Cash recorded their early albums, touring Graceland and hanging out with BB King, and they assumed U2’s heads had gone up their own butts.

The band of course came back and explained that they did those things as fans of the artists, not to try to prove something.

I’m glad you listened to the record without all that baggage and that you saw it for exactly what it is.  I think you might enjoy the movie.  Also the movie has a version of Sunday, Bloody Sunday that didn’t really fit on the album but brother, it’s INTENSE.

I saw U2 in Dublin Ireland at Croke Park on the Vertigo tour with 130,000 other fans. What a band…what a night! Your comments on the band are so insightful! Rattle & Hum was an amazing album. Unlike many other albums, there truly isn’t one bad track! Thanks for the trip down memory lane & for reminding me that U2 is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest bands of all time! Enjoy your U2 journey of discovery and keep up the great work!

yours is my new favorite YouTube channel you really listen deeply and openly to the albums you play and I love your spirit

I'm Irish and in 1980 my older brother told me about a band he'd just seen blow the headline act off the stage. Since then I've grown and shared my life with U2. I've seen pretty much every home tour since 1983 and looking forward to the next time. Loved your review and how you allowed the music to play in full. I've just spent almost 2 hours in your company!! The joy on your face is the same as the joy I still get from listening to these songs. For me as I've gotten older I feel pride that I backed the right horse back in the early 80's.

Van Diemen’s Land is an Irish song referring to the Troubles  the bloody war - struggle for independence from England   It is Australia and the English sent prisoners there.

S tier reaction to an s tier album 👍

Everything they did in the 80s is untouchable

So glad you found this album. I was in my 20s when it was released. Found U2 in the 80’s. Some have very deep feelings in me. God bless from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

The solo by the Edge titled Van Diemen’s Land is one of my favorites from this album. It’s about the British banishing Irish prisoners to Australia

7:23 U2’s version of “Helter Skelter” is actually much more TAME than the original Beatles. Even now, that song from 1968 is unhinged metal.
