YOU SUCK

Someone with an opinion of their own is refreshing in this space.

The point about not “copying and pasting” other people’s style is so important. I definitely fell into that trap when I was younger, and it would always feel inauthentic and resulted in a lot of money wasted on items that I didn’t truly love (or even like lol) because I was trying to mimic someone else.

I also totally agree that a lot of fashion “influencers” have very generic style. Owning expensive stuff is not the same thing as having good personal style. Most of the creators I follow these days are people who thrift and/or make the majority of their wardrobes, and their style is SO much more unique and interesting to me.

I'll always think of this quote from Caroline tucker "you don't like fashion, you like consuming" yesss we are such a materialistic society and fashion is a victim of it!

100 percent agree that some influencers are just walking billboards!  So true

"The problem with overconsumption is that you never get to fully form an opinion about a piece of clothing." So real, so true.

If there is guilt when you open your closet because you bought stuff you like on others, but not on yourself...get rid of those clothing items!  Hone your style and free yourself of the guilt!!

I love the sobering authenticity

That shade of red/orange looks so fucking good on you omg

Every year, I purpose to not shop for 3 months just to see what I need in my closet and its been game changer for my style. I'd recommend doing this if you are following trends alot.

60s to 90s fashion is sooooo inspirational especially because these decades are the eras our grandmas and moms largely grew up in and usually they are our first influences of entering into fashion.

The fashion content I engage with online is thinking of it as more as “theory” of how to putting outfits together as well as bc i love clothes from a sewing and materials perspective and just talking everyday wear fashion but i hate shopping largely bc of option fatigue and i get over the experience soooo fast and lets be honest i am broooooke. I have no money to be spending and i also struggle with gettign rid of clothes so getting more is not feasible for me.

The youtubers i watch for talking about fashion are you; laini ozark; karina gomez; caroline tucker; alex sunshine83; moderngurlz and even amazingishgrace and none of you really have the same style as me nor look like me so i value the difference of opinion and thought process

I'll be honest, as soon as i read the title i thought "oh well she'll just tell me about more stuff i MUST buy" 😂 this was so refreshing ❤

I totally agree about the chronically online one! I was in college in 2016-2020 before TikTok was really a thing, and I felt way more sure of the things I liked and loved my style way more!

the thing that taught me the most about my personal style is going away to college and only having room to pack a quarter of my closet and having to prioritize things that i think are cute and that i would actually wear. i had to get more creative with some of my outfits but looking back at photos i was cuter than ever

I think people forget that for the most part clothes are a causality from society and culture, not the starting point. The clothes itself doesn't set the precedent, it's the context around an outfit is what makes it influential. So in a way, if people are dressing the same, it can showcase the culture more, also showcasing the community more so than the individual.

But now we're having the opposite effect where the clothes are coming before the context, and are suppose to be each unique and influential themselves in a swarm of styles. This is why people have 'bad personal style'. It's disingenuous to them because it's disingenuous to their actual lifestyle, climate, community, culture and/or occupation. One that only dreams to be, instead of doing and making the clothes work for that (ex: cottage core → dream living in the homestead out in the middle of nowhere vs actually living in a homestead you're probably in overalls/trousers and a long sleeve and are involved or creating a community)

One could dress to express or make a statement even if it doesn't match their life, but that's where intentionality is key— You have to know what culture or statement you want to say (ex: old money, bold, classy, trendy, vintage, etc) but this takes lots of intentionally and time. It's a creative job really, which most do not have the time, space or resources for.

Really your lifestyle should come first, then your clothes and 'styling' will just follow, even if it's a pair of pants and a t-shirt. If it's functional to you in everyday, you are wearing the clothes instead of the clothes wearing you. If making a statement benefits you, like to build confidence, have people see you differently, or stand out more (look up 'Hollywood hair theory') then it should be a strategic play to appeal towards a community or specific audience, not so much 'expressing individuality' because individuality is not giving a f*ck really and just being.

If you don't like what your clothes say about you, dont just detox from social media, go be with people or things that ground you to life, make you feel in the moment. Then ask how you feel about your outfit and if it needs changing.

The ONE TRICK that helped me the most: Take a pic everyday of your outfits. Make a pinterest board. BOOM  there is your REAL personal style. You'll know what outfits/pieces you hated and what you loved.

Seeing the way you curate and delight in your own style has been so inspiring to me! Our styles are different, but I come away from each video motivated to enjoy my wardrobe and trust my own taste. You're just doing great work here.

I love doing low consumtion. It really helps with the buyers guilt because you never bought into the micro trends to begin with. I contemplate stuff for a while before I give in and buy it. I also really pay attention to what I love wearing day to day and just go with that.

Great perspective - I agree on so many points! As a 49 year old whose formative years were in the 90s, my personal style is deeply rooted in 90s minimalism and I am always drawn back to this time and time again. However, I find myself getting sucked into the occasional trend, especially in periods when I am online too much. Some of these trends take a more permanent place in my style to keep me feeling modern and fresh, but it can definitely be a slippery slope. I sometimes go through more maximalist periods too, where I just need to reconnect with more vibrant, vintage-y pieces, but I have learned this lesson about myself the hard way and now save a few of those pieces in storage for when the pendulum swings that direction again. I Just try to keep it fun and not take it too seriously. For me it is ultimately about balancing feeling confident and uniquely me, while also being kind to the planet and labor market.

Personally I love getting to see someone else in a cute outfit in a different style to me. I can appreciate a well put together outfit and fabulous pieces even if I wouldn't wear them. If anything I love it even more because I get to see pieces and looks I might not have come across before. Its the same fun of going to a museum to see painting I don't have at home.
