American reacts to “Every Rugby Position Explained in 18 Minutes” — and this one was a lot to take in, but also insanely interesting. 🏉🇬🇧

I’ve been wanting to dive deeper into rugby after some recent reactions — and this felt like the perfect intro. Honestly? I had no idea how many specific roles and strategies existed in rugby. Props, locks, flankers — I was trying to keep up with it all. 😅

I’ll definitely need a few replays to fully grasp it, but now I feel even more excited to watch full matches and explore the sport. Rugby fans — I’m officially curious. What should I check out next?

England are touring Americas at the moment, we play USA on 19th July, at Audi Field... Perfect opportunity for you to catch a full game on your home soil.

So funny that the video shows Richie McCaw when he talks about the fine line between genius and illegal lol

cheeky chips - a short little dink kick over the top of defensive line for a teammate to recover and advance.

"... I don't think I'm tall enough to play rugby..."

That's the great thing about it; no matter your size or physicality, there's a role for you on a team.

i'm 6' like you, I was an Openside Prop. The difference, my friend, is that I weight 306 pounds and build like a tank. When my knee ligaments decided to leave the chat, my surgeon told me that it was a normal operation... 45min tops of surgery. I stayed 3 and a half hours on the table, broke 4 tungsten drill bits because my bones are so dense. Now I cannot run nor squat because my very mass makes me hurt my knees. But well, those 10 years in the fray were very formative and gave me so much life advice so I don't resent it.

Unlike American football, rugby is two 40 minute halves of non stop action. Unlike NFL which has small action sequences so the tv companies can get to the advertisements.

Rugby have set number as it’s more about the team as a collective and not just individual players. No one’s greater than the team in rugby which is a different attitude to American sports

12:50 i would agree with that but i feel like the best example of the quarterback is a mix of the Scrum-Half and the fly half as the halves paring has to communicate as both move the forwards and the back line

"That trophy" at 9:51 is the rugby world cup. Its the Webb Ellis cup named after William Webb ellis who is the man who created rugby. The more you know 🎉

Hey mate, as a Brit originally from Rugby living in Germany I really appreciate what you're doing on your channel. The explanations of each position are great btw, I'm wishing you all the best on your journey to learn more about the game we all love.

The ultimate full-back is one that can play fly-half too, and if necessary, take the place of an injured wing.

A cheeky little “chip” means kicking the ball forward through players with the expectation that your team will be able to get to the ball 1st and retain possession.

I used to play blindside flanker and it was an absolute joy. Measuring your performance not by tries but by tackles and jackals. I miss it so badly

Those are position names I have heard outside of New Zealand.

9 is a Halfback
10 is a First five eights

I played representative grade rugby as a lock at the age of 12 and 13 and at that age I was 6 foot and almost 100kgs. I was typically the biggest guy on the field. However, whilst everyone else continued to grow, I stayed that size the rest of my life and ended up being dwarfed by every other rugby player!

Great video. Thanks for respecting the narrator

Ireland’s tighthead Tadhg Furlong does get a fair bit of glory in fairness. That's possibly because in addition to carrying out the traditional tighthead function he is also a deceptively fast runner for such a big guy.

@mrmr5580 1 year ago

He's right about the loosehead prop, I was that guy for my local amateur team at the time when i was in my 20s, my role was do the dirty work, if I get the ball, my role was to smash into the tackler (if you smash him hard enough, he'll be hesitant to go near you again, it becomes a mental battle, you try to mentally break your opposite number "I'm going to smash you, and when I get the ball again, I'm going to smash you again, and the time after that, and the time after that, and so on, if you can take that and keep coming back, then fair enough, just know that's what's going to happen" I've lost count of how many scrums were just me and the opposition tighthead just headbutting each other while trying to push the scrum, ive ended up in a few fights because of that, but it's a brilliant feeling when your teammates say thank you to you at the end of a game

The video he reacts to is actually such a good intro into the positions. I feel like every american reacting to rugby on YT should watch this at least once. Will make the highlight reels that they watch so much more entertaining. He should also watch one that explains a scrum and a ruck, then those massive pushes over the tryline in highlights just become so much more impressive.
