Why German supermarkets are taking over America. Aldi is quickly becoming one of the most popular supermarkets in the US, if not the most popular in a lot of areas. Today we got a breakdown of how it happened and why this German company is so successful. I really enjoyed this one. As an American, it made a lot of sense once you see the model: simple stores, low prices, and no extra nonsense.

German here, just for clarification:
you are supposed to drop your stuff in the cart as fast as possible at the checkout,
at your car you can bag it without holding up the line at the register, faster, relaxter and cheaper for all 😉

Trader Joe's is Aldi Nord, your American Aldi is Aldi Süd. Remember the story with the two brothers (like Adidas and Puma) that got into a fight. So, same family but different brothers and companies.

Yes the USA is so rich you can even afford houses made of cardboard boxes and put them on sidewalks.

When I was young, German gen-x here, shopping at ALDI was "for the poor". That took about a decade and then it was more like "I'm not poor, but I'm not stupid either." Now it is just how it is.

I am German: at Aldi, everything is geared toward absolute efficiency. They calculate down to the fraction of a cent. Barcodes are placed on almost every side of an item so the cashier doesn't have to hunt for them—they can simply swipe the item across the scanner. German discounters have driven down food prices in Switzerland, a country known for high costs. The UK, too, has felt the impact of German discounters like Aldi and Lidl. They are active across Europe—and now, they are coming to the USA.

When Americans complain about bagging their own groceries a phrase my Mother used to use comes to mind :"what did your last slave die of, do it yourself"

I prefer to bag my own groceries. It means i can bag in the way I want. Frozen in 1 bag, cold in another, meat not sharing a bag with fruit and veg etc. The bagging shelf at the front of the store is a great idea (I'm guessing they still have those in the US stores).

Having someone bag your groceries is such a lazy thing. They're your groceries, why do you need someone to put them into bags for you?

I actually had this happen once where a member of staff was talking to her friend at a supermarket checkout and decided to bag my shopping to make her look busy, but she didn't even put the frozen foods in the same bag and she put all the bottles together so one bag was much heavier than the others. I ended up unpacking them and repacking them right in front of her since I had to walk home and needed the bags packed properly. Why you would ever want someone to do that is beyond me.

If you look closely, you'll find that a lot of "no-name" products at Aldi and/or Lidl are actually produced by a big brand. A lot of them have a cheaper product line especially for disount markets.

My son went to Uni about 20 years ago...this is in Europe.. He got an an annual grant for living expenses, rent, food, petrol, etc...As a student he did all his grocery shopping in Aldi or Lidl...He did his Masters, he's in the medical profession, he has a high paying job.. His wife, also..they have 3 kids...But still, after 20 years, he still does his shopping in Aldi and Lidl...He says they have good quality products and good prices so why pay extra for brand names..

Fun fact , Most european supermarkets that i seen in my country have the Coin locked shopping carts while inside you have the shoping baskets that are now more commonly made to be pulled , like a wheeled suitcase then hold in the hand

Not gonna lie when I read the Thumbnail "Wallmart Killer" I did think you'd had another shooting again.

Aldi isn't a supermarket—it's a discount grocery store! It doesn't compete with Walmart or Costco either; the concept is different: more private-label brands, fewer package sizes, short supply chains, and lower costs. At Aldi, you won't find 50 different kinds of breakfast cereals or 100 flavors of ice cream—just plenty of everyday essentials at the best prices and top quality.

Belgian here.
I've been shopping at Aldi for 35 years now. I also do it when in other European countries : Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy.
I'v saved tens of thousands over those 30 years. And never had 1 bad meal.

In the UK Aldi and Lidl, both German discount stores, are expanding fast because the quality is fairly good and they are cheap. And they are everywhere; they fit in well to UK walking culture. The UK big stores like Sainsbury's and Tesco are struggling against the onslaught.
