You know why we’re here. Across the board, evil is way too hot. Villains in fiction used to be green and nasty and disgusting. Now they’re nasty and disgusting… in a different way. What caused this? How does it affect us? What does it say about us that we… like hot villains? Let’s talk about it.

I wanna hear you out on your "hear me outs". What hot villain has you bending your morals and why?

@greenhydra10 6 months ago

Ah, at last, an entire video essay on "If evil, why hot?"

1:12 “he’s in her apartment now 3/4 stalker”

No, Darryl! That’s full stalker already. Bad, Darryl!

Nah, hollywood struggles to make Superman likeable not because he is inherently good but because they keep failing to get his character right in a lot of his movies. 😅

To paraphrase an old post: “Her crimes are fictional. The chemicals firing off in my brain when I look at her are very real.”

"An Angel Makes Itself Look Scary To Ward Off Evil. A Demon Makes Itself Beautiful To Deceive Humans"

Edit: Amazing video Daryl, I'm so happy that you followed what you wanted and made a video that focused less on games. It turned out great!

Pretty privileges are real, whether you're good, bad or fictional

i am 5 minutes in and my hypthosys thus far is that villains more often then not are competent and people like watching competent people operate

@Kadulikan 6 months ago

Never in my life have I seen a more elaborate setup to trick me into watching Gossip Girl.

There is a small, but crucially important distinction, between "still would," and, "would."

@TacticalFlukie 6 months ago (edited)

The pool scene in reze arc isn't a moth, it's a unique type of butterfly that is poisonous(monarch butterfly). After the spider kills it, both the spider and the butterfly die. It's so beautiful. It shows how while denji has fallen for reze, she has also fallen for him

As is usual with human nature we tend to swing from extremes. I vividly remember the societal backlash against “ugly” characters being used to depict villains. This while good intentioned has nearly eliminated any “ugly” people at all being cast, the other side of the extreme. Also Dragonball imo is so powerful for the exact reason that EVERYONE is redeemable. The only villain never redeemed wasn’t even a real biological creature which says more about our opinion about AI and sentience than the idea that there’s a point of not being able to redeem oneself.

"He's in her apartment. 3/4 stalker now". 3/4, fr Daryl? You scaring me lil homie 😭

@The_Argonautica 6 months ago

I actually think full stalker is a step earlier there

@lilblop2656 6 months ago

On the flip side, one of my most fave tropes is when a good character goes through lots of hardships and sufferings that would have made many others into a justifiable/relatable villain, but the character still comes out of it with same heart, it may be a bit more guarded but it's still warm.

It's inspiring.

@headintheclouds1886 3 months ago (edited)

as someone who struggled endlessly over the exact question of “are they really redeemable?” with my abusive and manipulative (but still human and broken and flawed for reasons just like me or you or anyone else) ex, thank you for giving me so much to think about. this was an amazing exploration of temptation and redemption

@JustSanGuy 6 months ago

I thought that was the whole point of Evil... being tempting but corrupting

@em97c 6 months ago

I think a lot of people take issue with the whole "ugly characters are evil" coding because to their mind it encourages the halo effect being applied in real life - I'm not sure if that actually happens but I can see the logic.
The problem is that we haven't diversified into "sometimes ugly people are good actually," we've instead stopped including them at all so it's like "ugly people don't/shouldn't exist" which I would posit is worse.
