That’s a Plymouth Cranbrook club coupe, which was the upper trim level.  Cambridge was the base trim level.  You can tell it’s a club coupe and not a club sedan because there is no vent window in the rear window behind the door.  It’s top of the line!

Finding an abandoned 1953 Plymouth Coupe in England and trying to get it running is impressive. It’s amazing how classic cars can surprise us with their resilience.

Refreshing, the learning curve this man has. Those old flatheads were smooth, as I remember. Happy you found this Plymouth, I hope you enjoy every moment with it. I’m 75 and live in Georgia USA, even here it’s rare to see one of these on the roadways.
Hope it gives you many years of enjoyment!

That game of wack a mole was brilliant

Peggie Sue wanted to live again and she didn't disappoint. Lovely old thing and that interior is to die for.

Nice job indeed! You say that you're not that familiar with American cars, but you did well with this one. You were right in that it is in superb condition for its age. Exceptionally nice interior, not needing any repair of the seats. Yes, it runs smooth as butter. You were right about the "old School" craftsmanship, too. I'm an American. I'm almost 75 years old. I truly wish they still built them as well as they once did. I've had a couple of older cars, including a four door 1968 Chrysler Newport. It was green too! It was  almost 20 feet long. Finding a large enough parking space while shopping was a problem, but I loved it anyway. It drove like a dream, and was VERY comfortable. Best of luck on your next project.

In the UK, this style of valve arrangement is called side valve.  Stone axe simplicity, just like an old lawn mower engine, and actually some modern lawnmowers still use this design!!  If that head gasket is solid copper it can be reused but should be annealed before refitting. Problem is, with such a large gasket a big blow torch is required!

Top tip for blowing through lines, avoiding spraying the area with muck: either - tie a roomy cheesecloth bag around the exit, with a large catch-pan underneath - OR - push a suitable transparent hose over the exit and lead that to a transparent jerry can. Thanks for the entertainment

Last time I was on the edge of my seat was England winning the rugby world cup. This is the best video on YouTube hands down. Kept up the great work fella and much love to you

If that isn't a Tasty Classics keeper - I don't know what is! Great work.

Reminds me of the cars in the old milky way advert. Red car and the blue car had a race….. 😂 love it

Well Ben, you have pulled it out of the bag, for me personally that is one of the most beautiful cars you have rescued, whilst the condition is great the looks of that car are stunning, the lines and patina are just right. She has to be a definite keeper, I just love it. The video itself is brilliant and you deserve every credit that you get through comments, well done on getting her going, absolutely can’t wait for the next instalment once you get all your parts.

First time I have seen whack a mole on a set of valves Ben. Amazing work as usual. Very different from our usual UK fare, and very interesting. Great video

I'm seriously jealous, can't believe how that engine runs and sounds👍👍

That is a proper beginning of a weekend. Just helped myself to a bottle of whiskey, opened youtube, and boom - a 2-hour long video from Ben

What an awesome episode Ben, loved it! Such determination and paid off in the end. I'm sure NNKH from America would be proud of you for getting this American beauty back running again

Thanks for the vid - looks like a great start.  Have driven Studebakers for 30+ years, and many of them were equipped with Borg-Warner overdrives.  They are great for their endurance and flexibility.  Most units gave you a 0.7 to 1 ratio in overdrive, so a really low rear end gear set was still highway capable when the OD was engaged.  Best of luck and keep us posted.

wow! what a beautiful car. I'm a hardcore Mopar guy myself. Someone has taken the badges off and put rivets in the holes where they should go. There should be one on the trunk and one on each front fender. Chrysler just changed the badges and some trim between models so it is tricky to tell what model it is just from appearance. But the good news is I found it! The model number always starts with the letter P (for Plymouth, D if it was a Dodge) and if you look at 29:36 you'll see P24 stamped on the side of the engine block which if I look it up says it's a Plymouth Cranbrook. Fantastic job and I love the sound of those Chrysler flat heads!

I had a 1951 Plymouth Cambridge during my senior year of high school (1966-1967) same running gear as your 53 minus the overdrive transmission.  The engine was as solid as a brick, the transmission was ample for the year.  I loved that old thing.  I came home from school one day and found my own mother gave it to her brothers to leave town.  I can’t tell you how upset I was.  Betrayed by my own mom.  I worked hard for that car.  It wasn’t a gift.  At age 76 I still want to replace it.  Maybe one day.

Apologies if you've solved this already, but from some google research I believe that's a 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook. Cranbrooks were the top trim level, and so had bits like stainless/chrome trim around the windows, locking glove-box, and horn ring. Yours seems to have all that stuff, so I think it's a Cranbrook rather than the mid-spec Cambridge. Bear in mind I'm not an expert, so take this with a pinch of salt 😅
