The JoJo’s games (Heritage for the Future and All-Star Battle R) have some pretty interesting moves and character specific mechanics, but the three Anubis wielders in Heritage for the Future (Chaka, Dark Polnareff, and Khan) probably have one of my favorites in their counter.
One of the Anubis Stand’s abilities in the manga was that whoever wielded the blade could easily adapt to whatever attacks were used against it in the past. Heritage translated this in their counter. Whatever their counter hit would become a move “learned” and whenever that “learned” move was blocked after the counter, the Anubis holder would flash white and could instantly get out of blockstun and attack back (not like guard cancel, just all blockstun outside of one frame was erased). And Anubis could “learn” multiple moves…

Sometimes I think about that one character from Bleach who's sword can only heal people, so when they put them into the waggle fighter on the Wii you had to avoid using their basic moveset or else you would never hurt your opponent

Putting “What’s 8x3?” in a fighting game video thumbnail  is absurdly funny

One that I don’t see being brought up is Valentines poison vials from Skullgirls. The first type of poison is basic damage over time, which is p standard. The second gives increased hitstun in combos, which is can lead to some insane routes. But the most interesting and unique is her third type, which gives your opponent input delay for a set amount of time. This is the only mechanic I can think of which messes with input delay in this way, and it can lead to situations where you had to block the mixup 1s ago. And in a game as fast and as reset-heavy as Skullgirls, that’s basically unblockable

Dorothy in Arcana Heart 3 (my fav character tbh) has a whole Thing where her moves leave cards behind and when you get particular poker hands it does more damage.  The suit depends on the button pressed.

They didn’t mention the best part of Squigly’s center stage move. When it is charged it has “super flash” properties. This lets you cancel the special move into a post super flash unblockable super. If you are not blocking before charged center stage is used (which squigly has time to react to). You get unblockabled by the super.

Xavier the warlock in Eternal Champions for the Genesis in 1994 used to have a confusion spell that would scramble the opponent's controls too.  Wild series.  The Sega CD version even escalated things with one character who could add or remove time from the game clock, and another character that had a fully invincible move that rained chip damage down on the whole screen in a way that was spammable against anyone that didn't know the system mechanics

Love to see some Skullgirls in there. A lot of the characters in that game are so interesting, specially in the context of team games. And also some Hokuto no Ken appreciation beyond the usual broken stuff.

19:39 this was my favourite shit to do a few years ago. i hadn't a single clue how to actually play squigly but it didn't matter when this messed up assist made beowulf j.hp a functionally fullscreen jump in and instantly won neutral as a result... it's so stupid, evil and got me so many undeserved wins but was my very gratifying guilty pleasure lol
