There's a clip I can't find anymore regarding Wolverine's Swiss Cheese. In the runup to UMvC3's release, there was footage available and interviews with Seth Killian. There's footage of someone from say GameStop or IGN really excited asking about Wolverine's new move. Keep in mind, Wolverine was a pretty prominent character in vanilla.

Seth Killian probably knows this move is pure dog already and has the most honest nervous laugh upon hearing the question because he now has to answer it in a way where it should be exciting to hear Wolverine has a new move.

If someone can find that clip and link it here, I'd be eternally grateful. It's just too funny.

the existent of swiss cheese is to expose wolverine players mashing

Ruby's coin flip super could have been cool if a bad guess just did less damage and let you keep going instead of ending the sequence immediately.

"In the back of your mind you're always thinking: I don't wanna get swiss cheese."

I could see that Ruby Heart super being a "casual fun" kind of super... if it actually did more damage when you got it right. Like, getting all 6 swords 100-0ing a character kind of damage. It's a 1/64 chance, and sure it would be stupid if someone won a tournament with it, but I don't think anyone who is seriously trying to win would attempt it. Let the effect match the hype, dammit!

I love that the two appearances of HNK in this Strongest/Useless series have been the two simplest moves possible: "the DP that kills you" and "the throw that doesn't throw"
Edit: my B I forgot about the shotgun :/

The worthless moves are the ones I choose and the good ones are the ones my opponent chooses.

Yes this is cope.

I refuse to believe someone at Capcom "tried their best to make every move useful in some way" when designing Tundra Storm.
The move is so trash that it barely impacts the Gief vs. Elena match- up, despite the fact that all of Elena's normals and specials are kicks.

The thumbnail for this hurts, im the wolverine player they made Swiss Cheese for! Im the masher (*T^T)

Justin Wong also famously said AND I QUOTE:
"Do you understand? That is a worthless button! That button is so...WORTHLESS!"
Justin Wong talking about Hugos dropkick after Hayao makes a comeback with it at EVO 2024.

Where was that button featured in this video, Justin?

Concerning SFA3 Ryu: It's actually the other way around - Metsy Shoryuken is the low damage one, Shin Shoryuken is the "proper" one that does full damage.

So the thing about the ruby heart super is its an homage to the takara tomy kids toy pop up pirate 黒ひげ危機一発 which is a guessing game where you take turns puting swords in a barrel and the loser is the one who triggers the pirate. Like a jenga/dont wake daddy mashup

Jubei in Samurai Shodown is sadly also plagued by a Swiss Cheese. Same input and everything. And when you use it, it's pretty much guaranteed that unless the other person just wasn't looking at the screen, you're getting owned.

Man, Ryu's SFA3 Shin Shoryuken broke my heart as a kid.

The Ruby Heart super is a reference to the game Pop-Up Pirate, which also made a silly appearance in the BBTag 2.0 story DLC (much to the consternation of resident edgeboi Seth). As the old meme goes, it isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

29:42 It could also be that they felt like throwing a character that size didn't work with the throw animations the characters had. A lot of decisions did get made on "does this make sense/look right" rather than "Is this a good gameplay mechanic."

As a wolverine masher I hated Swiss Cheese. He was always part of my team in the earlier games.

SFV Honda and Ed still had mash inputs

Ryu's SFA3 level 3 super seems more like a fanservice super than anything else, something that's not meant to be useful, but put in as a neat bonus. Interestingly, Capcom revisited this "max distance" idea with Fei Long in the console ports, as he has a level 3 that works the same way.
