Very good explanation! But I believe a lot of the new codes are just bureaucratic nonsense created purely by those have-nothing-better-to-do bureaucrats for the purpose of showing off their powers while making people's life unnecessarily harder with zero real benefit.

The biggest mistake when people replace 3-way switches is they don't realize every manufacturer puts the black wire in a different location

This thread has multiple responses to the question of why this code requirement is present, and many miss a critical point. When you use the reassigned white wire to carry constant power, the future homeowner or electrician will get instant feedback if he tries to use that wire as a neutral, regardless of the switch positions. There is always power on that line, and the breaker will trip, or a new device won't work if power is coming from both sides. So, the risk of delayed misadventure years later as a result of tape falling off or ignorance is reduced.

My house is full of these! Most, if not all, of the 3 and 4-way circuits are "dead-end" but instead of using the white wire between box 1 and box 2 as the common hot, they use the white and red as travelers with the black wire used as the common. They did however neglect to re-designate/mark the white as a traveler and not a neutral.

When I was a kid, my dad decided to put an overhead light in the dining room. He thought he'd done everything right.

When my mother noticed, though, that turning on a vacuum cleaner plugged into the dining room wall outlet would also turn on the overhead light, we quickly realized something wasn't quite right.

With dead end three ways some jurisdictions require you to rephase the white with indelible marker instead of tape.

Your 3-way talks are the best. My favorite is the Chicago 3-way. I never knew it by name, but I came across it while troubleshooting a dining room chandelier in the 1980s in my 1905 house. I remember thinking “this scary thing works, but why did they do it this way?”

What if you take the original wiring arrangement, but use the black wire in the three conductor for the return to the load, and used the white wire as the traveler (re-identified with purple tape, of course).

I guess that, because New York City has his own code, I was taught this as an apprentice in the early 1980s. Also a neutral re-tasked into a hot leg was not required to be identified until 2010 or somewhere around there.

My house had 3 way switches for the hall light. When 1 failed, I bought 2 new switches. These had no labels, instructions, or anything, so I think I tried to just swap them out with same wiring. Didn’t work, so I fiddle around until I got 1 switch to work, then left it.
With this info, I’ll take another crack at it. Was probably 15-20 years ago, before it was easy to find online help.

Our inspectors now say that you have a continuous feedwire in box 2, you must have a continuous neutral in that box also, so now you've got to run a 4 conductor with ground, and they say that's national electrical code. She says it's because you need to have a neutral in any box that has a continuous hot for the install of new smart equipment

I have always used BLACK power in/BLACK power out as a way to think of 3-way/4-way switches. I am not a certified electrician, but in Idaho I was able to wire my house to NEC2023 and it passed all inspections. I came up with that motto after making some mistakes with my first 4-way circuit. I also like the way Germans call a 4-way switch a slap or cross switch.

I don’t remember if it was the master electrician I was an apprentice to or someone else later, but my understanding is that you want white wires to carry the neutral legs and when they have to carry hot (like this example 3-way), be connected to a switch so that even if the black electrical tape indicating it’s a hot is missing, even a moderately Trained Electrician will still suspect it of carrying hot.

The first electrical wiring fix I ever did was as a teenager when the 3-way switch my dad put in never worked right. One switch was only providing power to the other, so I thought about it for a bit, moved a couple wires and it worked! I was thrilled! It may not have been code compliant by today's standards but that was a very long time ago.

Thanks for this. I have been agonizing over a situation I have. This video resolved my mental dilemma. I have a 3-way switch in a detached garage and also by the kitchen back door that controls the porch light outside the back door. I want to add a light to the outside of the garage that also works on this 3-way circuit. The wires between the garage and the house are underground and not easily accessible. I thought there would be major rewiring if the feed wire started in the garage instead of the kitchen, but now I see it is an easy change if that is the case. I hope my description makes sense, and thanks again for your videos.
