I'm a woodworker so generate a lot of sawdust. I load the sawdust into cardboard boxes (anything will do, cereal boxes etc) pack it in as dense as it will go without bursting the box, close them back up, and then just place them on the fire. Works fine.

Mix the sawdust with a little paraffin,  that's how they make fire starters.     I put them in cardboard egg cartons so they are easy to break apart.
One egg spot cut in half is enough to start a nice fire without drama.

Holding the mic with a stick is perfect for this kind of content lol

I just started working in a sawmill in Finland; the kilns are powered entirely by burning sawdust and bark shreds.
Any remaining sawdust is sent for pulping to make paper.

Bro took a 30 second video and pumped it past 8 minutes!!

As a pre-teen, I was suprised that a couple of kilos of sawdust would burn in the open (garden bonfire) for 8 to 10 hours, still glowing red in the ash in the morning.

I don't currently have a home with a woodburner fireplace but i did about 8-10 years ago and grew up in a place with one.  Not sure how the algorithm decided to recommend this channel...but here i am.

Before I moved to the city, I used sawdust, but not quite like that...
I'd save up my old candle wax, melt it down, mix it with wood shavings, and packed it down into old pans. When it cooled, it made some awesome firestarter!

I always get the stove up to full temperature first and then put in the unusual fuels.

For sawdust, stack enough wood on top to slow down any sparks that get stirred up and ensure everything burns up before it goes up the chimney.

And having it hot before you put in the questionable stuff helps make sure any odd chemicals burn up before going out into the air.

Still avoid paint.  Those sometimes have metals that won't play nice even if burned, and avoid treated wood because it can be acidic and increase the rusting of your chimney.  But any plastic or glue residues will break down nicely with proper air control.

Hi Ryan, you always manage to do a great video but I just wanted to give my one and only experience burning sawdust, I was on my narrow boat burning dust on a morso squirrel and I wrongly loaded the burner up with dust and once it was going I turned both vents down for a long burn, after several hours I opened the bottom vent (probably fully) and there was a mini explosion.  No exaggeration but the pressure from something igniting blew smoke and dust everywhere

I add a little paraffin and then press them into bricks. They last longer since there is less surface area and they very dense.

Burn clean, burn hot so nobody knows you are burning. That's exactly how I do it - ex-council house on an estate, wood burner is my only heating. Wood is hazel from a coppice - an ancient woodland where derelict hazel is being restored to cycle. Seasoned and then finish-dried under cover. I bring it home on a flatbed trailer with timber pins in 5' lenghts and then log up in a brake. This creates a lot of chainsaw 'dust'. It's actually chips with very little actual dust 'cos the saw stays sharp.  'Cos the wood is seasoned and dry, so are the chips. Woodburner gets started on kindling and logs (I never burn coal on principle) and when it gets to the embers stage, I load the chips on with a shovel. Occasionally I get some actual dust from the chop saw. If the wood is untreated and un-painted, I collect it and mix with the chainsaw chips and burn as before.

No issues in over a decade of doing this.

Hi Ryan! I discovered your channel 2 weeks ago and i love the concept, as simple as it is, love your energy too :) cheers from France

There is an alternaive which I learned from a carpenter, but it works only wit top-loaded ovens. There are tubular inserts made of cast iron. You insert them into the oven and fill the room besides the insert with sawdust and compress the sawdust very well, using a log or the like. Then you remove the insert and throw the burning tinder and kindling into the resulting hole. Be careful to compress the sawdust really good, otherwise ist will cruble and cut off the air ventilation. This will burn slowly away from the hole, and last for 19 to 15 hrs, according to the size of the oven.

Great burn Ryan 👍🏻

Thank you for this great experiment. The suggestion and the safety concerns are apreciated. Just one little thing, the cardboard is made of 2 external sheets and a flute in the middle, they are glued together, with a paper glue.

sure as a initial het source it is great.  got the stove up to temp quickly and warmed up the house nicely.  now toss on your loose coal and a couple of long burning briquettes and you have a good way to heat a home nicely.

Wow, I never thought it would be safely possible to burn loose sawdust. I just assumed it would start to burn and then end up flying around in the oven, which might be bad if it burns all the way up the chimney. But this way seems the way to go. Interesting, since a lot more people have some occasional sawdust left over, but don´t make enough to get a press.

Thanks a lot. I am a woodturner and generate a lot of wood dust. Normally I'd throw it away and compost it. But from now on (when it starts getting cold again) I'll try this!
