I always remember my grandad would stack his wood burner to the brim when he was going to be out. My grandma had very shakey hands at it wasn't safe for her to top up the stove. Stacking it to the brim and closing the vents down meant the house would stay warm for grandma all day without her having to touch the wood burner.

The reason this video is so valuable is that alot of people want to set their fireplace for maximum burn times to last through the entire night. It's easy to say tend to the fire every 2 hours but that's not practical for someone who want so set it up at 9pm and make it last all through the night till 6am.  Most people don't want to get up every 2 hours all through the night to tend to a fire. So saying that burn times aren't important is foolish to me.  I want maximum fuel, for maximim burn times for unattended warmth all through the night.

Log burner gets installed on December 11th, can't wait!

In regards to the moisture meter you’ll get more accurate results if you split the wood and test the fresh surface as the exposed surface is always drier

Lopi 2020 inbuilt here.

We don’t use a temp gauge.

Using really nice Red Gum (Eucalyptus) with a bed of coals can load the largest pieces possible in (as opposed to half a dozen small pieces) and by weight usually can tell the older trees.   Load it up at 8-9 PM, maybe 15-30 min on full air and then min air.   Burns to 8am easily.   Not visible but able to be rekindled.  The real kicker is that throwing some paper and kindling in at 6 PM the following day can restart it without matches even if nothing is done at 8am.

Love it when things are optimal and bang in the middle!

For someone who is so passionate about wood stoves, I’m really surprised that you actually did this !

In order to increase the bang in the middle of the optimal ratio per video, i recommend the following: When you want to say "Its high optimal" instead say "Its on the higher edge of bang in the middle of optimal"

I remember my Gran used to wrap the veg peelings from dinner in wet newspaper on the back of the fire before bed and it would slow the burn enough that the embers were still taking the chill off the next morning.

Well.. my trick is to wait until there is a good bed of coals at the end of the evening, then pile on the fireplace like this but the thick pieces at the bottom on the coals and getting thinner at the top.. i end up waking up in the morning to a toasty living room and still some great hot coals at the bottom to put some more logs on which'll goe up nice and quick again. Usually best with something like oak and birch, i reckon... Would be good to see you try it? (sorry not sure if you have, new to the channel. cheers)

Our installer told us he put a stove in for someone and a few weeks later the man called him complaining his slate hearth had cracked and he should replace it for him FOC. He went round to his house and he said it was really hot in there, the stove was filled right up and the sides were glowing slightly, he reckoned that was why his hearth cracked. Hence his warning to us was never overfill your stove and keep the temperature within optimal lol.

this guy can sell you anything !! nice work dude.

In the dead of winter I load our stove to the max in morning. Then about half way in the late afternoon when I get home. One last full load again at the end of the night for the overnight.

On really cold nights I’ll stick a few extra pieces of wood in right before I go to bed.

Good video man. I'm a big fan of getting the stove going, and throwing on one piece at a time and leaving the damper open completely. Keeps my stove "bang in the middle of optimal"

Nice. You build a Fireplace in a Fireplace. Efficiency pays off.👍🏻

Great guy, need a drinking game every time he says "bang in the middle of optimal" also saying things a couple times when you mess up only works if you actually cut it after 😄 🤣.  All jokes aside I love this kind of testing

Have you ever not had an insane result from anything you’ve burnt?

I love this. Thanks for sharing

these videos almost single handedly convinced me to get a blithfield lol
