I remember as a kid when the coal merchant use to call and fill the coal shed up in summer at a good price ready for winter. We didn't burn coal, but I think a product called clean glow

I am far too excited about this video.  I accept I need to get out more 😂😂

I've only ever seen kindling under the coal as heat rises.

I wish I lived in a house with an open fire like I did as a child, so nice, love the videos keep up the good work.

Evening Ryan, as a child we always had a coal fire. The coal man would come every week.   Lovely memory. Another fab video 👍👌 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

In the early 1950s my dad and his mates used to collect small pieces of coal that washed up on the beach near Grimsby docks bunkering berth area. He said the beach was covered with it. A walk on Grimsby or Cleethorpes beach tideline nowadays will still reveal bits of coal. Just shows how much was used as fuel in the past.

I have used coal for the most part this year. I now buy by the tonne, to bring down the price. Around £14:60 a 25kg bag it works out at.
I also once going get a decent log on in the middle.
My stove is a 17kw, with a boiler for the radiators in the house. Once going keeps the heat nice sometimes a bit to warm for me!

Love these videos, so thank you.

YOU  NEED A COAL CAGE GUY ! I cut my coal bill in half & the fire stays in overnight 😊😊😊 hope this HELPS 😜

When I was a kid I remember the Fireman of the steam train shoveling out the coal down the embankment. His family were there with their buckets to collect it

Where I am from in the US coal stoves were still very common. Beautiful pieces of hardware some old early 1900's cast iron some new steel cool stuff

I'm much preferring the smokless coal briquettes over wood at the moment. They just provide a much more consistent heat output and over a much longer period than wood.
They are a bit of a graft to get going. but once they going you can just sit back and relax.
The only issue with the briquettes... all the damn ash.

These Compressed Coal Briquettes are made from a mix of (Bituminous, Steam, Dry Steam coal) coal pieces and coal dust along with a binder like pitch, they use up what would be bunker waste that is knock of during transport and processing. World War II had a significant impact on briquette production, to maximise the use of available coal.

Great video Ryan👍

I use coal ovoids in a Stanley Erin boiler stove.  I find the best way (for my needs) is to start with about 4kg and close the stove down as soon as the rads begin to warm up. This keeps the rads warm for about 5 hours. Then in the evening I'll add another 4kg and open stove about 20% and the rads get hot for maybe 4/5hours. Before bed I'll add around 5kg and close stove completely again.  Rads will be cold by morning, but stove itself will still be hot so the house is comfortable enough.  On the coal itself, I'm in Ireland and get pallets of 50 bags from a company in Northern Ireland. Costs €540 delivered, so €10.80 (£9.40) per 20kg bag.

That is marketed as a 'renewable' fuel, not 'fossil' fuel. Thus, I have to guess that is made from wood, not dug up from a mine, making it what we call here charcoal. You can find some of that in your ashes if you carefully sift them after the fire has burned down and cooled.
It makes a great way to start your fire up if you invert the way you are building it.
I shred up some junk mail, place it between 2 small logs on the bottom, spread some charcoal bits on the shredded paper adding some small twigs in that, lay 2 to 4 small sticks across the logs, then lay increasingly larger sticks on top of that. Preheat the chimney with a small sheet of newsprint burning right under the chimney, then light another one & use it to light the shredded paper at the bottom.
As soon as that collapses, some larger logs can be placed on top.
No 'fire-starters' or blow-torches are needed. just 1 or 2 matches.
Lighting it from the top, all the flames do is heat the exhaust air and it goes right up the chimney.

Cheers for the video ryan stove fitted in under 2 weeks now and that will be my go to coal as 50kg at £32 seems ok for me and nice to know how to set it up so i can just get it ready and settle in for the evening and watch it tick over without doing to much jist the odd poke now and again 😀
Cheers
Mark

I live on a narrow boat, a 25 kg bag of XL made by the same company as red last about 3 days burning 24 hours a day, my stove is a 410 squirrel.

Що не кажи але вугілля це найкраще і довге джерело тепла!

Takes me half an hour, to clean ashes, glass, fireplace, fill two tins of coal to dry under the stove AND fully light my smokeless phurnacite. Grate is clean, 3 firelighters, 8-10 sticks, let the flue warm and get the draw going. All vents fully open. Once its properly lit, close bottom air down, leave top air slightly open. Have lovely warm fire for 9-10 hours. I was told light coal from bottom up and logs from top down. To be honest if I had to faff about I wouldn't be bothered lighting it. After 9-10 hours,  rake out all the ashes into Ash tin add a few sticks (if needed) open up all the air and as steps above it's good to go another 9-10 hours without the need to touch it
