What do the first supermodel, teen actress star, and y2k pop star all have in common?
We have failed them. Repeatedly.
The history of child stardom is over a century old, and unfortunately, history keeps repeating itself. What started as a rant about how people ignore Evelyn Nesbit's abusive past spiraled into a deeper dive into the long, dark, and frustrating history about how we treat young teenage girls who happen to be famous (usually as a result of a narcissistic, abusive mother). This video is a bit darker than normal, but the topic is long overdue. From Evelyn Nesbit, Brooke Shields, Britney Spears, and Miley Cyrus, society just loves blaming the girl-child for the actions of the adults who are supposed to protect her.
I'm so sick and tired of all this victim blaming. We need to do better - tell history better and realize just because victims are now adults or passed away does not give us a free pass to share and consume problematic stuff.
Also - I didn't stutter at the end.

And this video reminded me of that... why was nobody upset at young girls being forced to go naked in film or photo's? It is gross and upsetting.
Personally, as a disabled person, I’m terrified of the concept of conservatorship. The idea that all my legal rights could be taken away without my consent (or even knowledge) is horrific. I’m glad Brittney was able to escape and set legal precedent, but it’s still at its core a disturbing and abusive system.
The TNG cast were wonderful to him, but they had no idea what was going on at home.
His mother basically managed him, and forced him to keep working as an actor, even when he said he wanted to stop.
He was supporting his family, somewhat unknowingly.
His parents spent every dime he made.
He and his sister were abused on a C-rated movie set.
What is he most remembered for?
“Shut up, Wesley!” — said to his TNG character, by the captain and his mother, *while they were being influenced by an outside source*. His character was the teenaged genius, who sometimes screwed up, but also sometimes had more sense than the adult crew. Somehow this turned into his character being hated by people who were annoyed, and sometimes, hating on the actor himself.
He now talks pretty freely about his parental physical and emotional abuse. He’s made a little corner of writing and geekery for himself. He’s even agreed to do some Star Trek stuff in the last few years, as an adult. But it was a long road for him to get there.
Edit: Oh yeah, and RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES!
She was a child, who was told how to dance, how to dress, how to act.

"There were so many adults in the room." This is really the bit that gets me every time.
