A hatpin was a woman's best friend. It kept her hat in place, protected her from bad guys, and also helped her fight for her basic human rights. But it wasn't fighting, suffragists, or crime that got the hat pin banned by governments, it was because of manspreading on public transport and carousels...??

Huge thank you to Miss Maybell for collaborating with me on this projected and bringing the sheet music I found scrolling through the library of congress to life - the song was so much better than I could have hoped! 💖 https://www.loc.gov/item/2017562253/

"Dead and without a Wikipedia page" is a real way to throw modern shade at someone from the past

If you’re close enough to someone to get scratched by their hat pin, you’re too close.

About 1980, my grandmother gave me a 6" pearl hatpin. I carried a velvet clutch purse to school. I stuck the hatpin in the flap as a decoration. Months later, a boy tried to grope me on the school bus. Hatpin to the rescue! Unfortunately, the pin was confiscated, but Hands Boi never got near me again. My grandmother was in a wheelchair and couldn't speak (due to stroke.) When I told her what happened, she laughed her backside off.

Thank you, Granny. ❤

I used to take my knitting on a train when I was a student. Once my Dad said "You have those long needles with you when you take a train late in the evening? Good for you"

There's a 1920's song about hatpins:
originally sung by Elsa Lanchester
"Never go walking out without your hat pin
Not even to some very classy joints
For when a fellow sees you've got a hat pin
He's very much more apt to get the point"

Just a reminder to NOT put your keys between your fingers, if you are close enough to use them you are better off punching them the keys are more likely to hurt you than anything else and you risk losing them.

This reminds me of the Bojack Horseman episode where women start to carry guns, so the government bans guns. Because "The government hates women more than they love their guns."

25:43 Can we please just take a moment to appreciate the fact that the Mayor who banned hatpins in Indianapolis was named Mr Shank? That right there is poetry

I’ve always wanted hats to come back in fashion and am personally wearing them more because of the sun, and now I’m even more pro hats because hat pins. BRING BACK HATS AND HATPINS!!!

Thank you, Abby,
Even though Google took down International Women's Day off of our calendars, you always reminded us how important we are and not to forget our history of fighting for women's rights ❤️

How is it that women were not also being scratched by the hatpins of other women while on public transport? Hmmm?

I recently read a book that the protagonist used her hat pin to kill a militia member (1925 ish era) she managed to get it between ribs and into his heart. (Author Roselind Tate)

Yes, those damn dangerous Snickersnees. Yet, you can open carry an AR15 in Texas. This world is twisted.

When my great grandmother passed away I got all her hat pins. That was several decades ago and I could not believe how long some of them were! She was born in the Victorian era but grew up in the Edwardian era.

I was in a historical reenactment and I was carrying a hat pin, and a spectator commented “that could be used as a weapon “ I was like definitely.

So, the reason it was made illegal: (Anastasia voice) men are such babies

Also, were you outside in the National Mall? Iconic

14:29 Wow ! A 12 inches long hatpin ! That impressive ! 😯 Nearly 20 inches long, converting to men's measurement system

Was that Nicole's cackle in the windy "This is why we love hatpins!" scene? 😂

Happy International Women’s Day! The timing couldn’t have been more impeccable. Also, I loved this episode in history since I first heard of it and I know it’s going to be such fun.

P.S. Hatpin Mic high-key slaps. Slay!

I remember going to concerts where we were searched for weapons - and they took away the men's wallet chains, when I was not only wearing a heavier chain around my neck but also a heavy solid metal pendant and even bracelets with spikes. Just got waved through. I think that was the only time in my life when sexism gave me protection. I guess they thought, mistakenly , that women wouldn't start a fight ? That necklace actually proved quite useful in self defense later on. So don't forget that your other accessories can be used for protection as well.
