I've actually been through the Panama Canal, and it's really hard to understand the sheer scale of the whole thing just from photos and maps. It's takes half a day just to sail through the lake, and the entire thing is just lined shore-to-shore with skyscraper-sized cargo ships. The idea that they built it with concrete, steam engines, and dynamite is absolutely insane. 5000 years from now, people will be like  "There's no way those primitive gun-toting cowboys built this by themselves!" the same way we talk about the Great Pyramid

I watch you all the time for hours, as a Panamanian this one is special. My dad worked as a traffic controller and retired from the canal while I was growing up and I cross it everyday going to work. Thanks for the video!

12:20 - Small correction here.  Back then, the word "bully" more meant something like an optimistic and righteous way to do something.  So, the "Bully Pulpit" was something of a cheer squad, or a hype man.  It wasn't used in the same way we use it today.

It's kind of amazing that they didn't do something about the mosquitoes right away, just for the annoyance factor alone.

I could listen to Thoughty2 forever! His voice and content are so soothing.

He promised and he delivered. What a legend

Haliburton is someone I've never heard of and I need more stories on his crazy life lol

Admirer since 2015. Love what you do, Arran.

Brilliant storytelling, as usual. Chapeau.

I really enjoyed this one. No one tells a story better than you.

"Some silly tower in Paris !" Sacré bleu! 😂😂😂

That is not what the bully pulpit meant, and you know that as a Brit.

Many thanks Aaron. Brilliant as usual 👍🫡🫡

youtube is pushing their luck with the number and frequency of commercials they've been playing with this video...

Stevens was True Engineer!  Methodical identification of goals, obstacles, and solutions to each via a logistical mapping framework.

If only we solved all our problems this way...

There are very few people on YouTube who can keep me captivated for so long. Great job!

0:01 “hey, 42 here”

i really feel sorry for the guys going around the cape of good hope to get around america

I was born in "Gorgas Family Hospital" to my American dad and Panamanian mom. Watching this video made me think to research who the hospital was named in honor of and it was none other than Colonel Gorgas. It was closed after Panama gained control over the canal. I never realized till now I had such a fascinating connection! Thanks Thoughty2!
