Moral of the story?  If the rats runaway, maybe take an impromptu camping trip in the nearest mountains....

When it comes to these lost cities in places like the Amazon I don’t think many really consider or understand how fast nature can take the place over

Y'know what... after a YouTube feed that bombards me with Ai BS "documentary" slop...finding one from Simon really IS a breath of fresh air in these troubled times.

Legend has it that once upon a time there was a fine show called Brain Blaze... It was hosted by a Fact Boi named Simon and both the show and the Boi was loved by all. Then one day, without warning nor farewell, the Blaze was extinguished... The Boi remained, but the Brain...it lives now only in memories....

There's an argument that the Greek cyclops of myth were based on mammoth skulls. There were mammoths in the Mediterranean, and mammoth skulls do look a lot a single giant eye socket.

I've always been convinced dragon myths came from dinosaurs bones being found.

I remember one hypothesis that states that the Minoans did require mainland Greeks to send them children for human sacrifice, and that the Minoan priests who performed the sacrifices wore bull head masks. That image of a Minoan man wearing a bull head mask while murdering Greek children could have been passed down through oral history and eventually wound up as the Minotaur myth.

I don't know if there's any actual evidence to support that hypothesis, but it does sound plausible.

I am so happy that he mentions Griffin's instead of just focusing on the dragons  because Griffin's have been around just as long as dragons have in mythology and yet for some reason that the scaled winged lizards get far more screen presents and media presence then the eagle lions!

One of my favorite theories for the Trojan Horse story, is that a 'horse' was a boat with a horse figurehead. So leaving a boat as a gift with men hiding below the decking. As such, it would not stand out as a strange gift to the defenders, and would would be simple for the army to build with an armada of boats at hand.

I remember as a child being told, it is very difficult if not impossible to confabulate a lie or untrue story from nothing. Every story no matter how far fetched started with a real object, creature or event that was real. It's trying to sift out where the real stops and the embellishment starts.

I'm Canadian. We learned about the Vikings settling in Canada in the 1980s.

In the Iliad, Homer mentions that outside of Troy was the Tomb of the Amazon.  I think this could be looked for, too; when Schliemann went to find Troy, he reportedly asked local herdsmen and farmers about ancient stories; they pointed to the rise of land where Schliemann found the Troys.  Perhaps they might also know of this ancient tomb that was well-known enough to last through the ages in stories about it.  Also, the Romans dug up bones and displayed them.  They became shrines that people journeyed to to behold the bones of the ancients or the gods.

Thus the Millihelen. The precise amount of beauty required to launch a single ship.

I remember in the mid-90s we were singing ‘in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue, but 500 years before Lief Ericson sailed its northern shores’ because we loved the "gotcha" factor of how popular the growing evidence of Norse travel to America was when we read about Columbus in social studies. Been fascinated by that era of history ever since.

I'm from the Island of Newfoundland, and still live here. We've been learning this version of history for a very long time. 💙 There's more norse culture and genetics here than will ever be documented.

My theory about the Minotaur is based on having read that Minoan burials have been found with a bull's head in the coffin with the body, as a sort of funeral offiring. . Suppose someone who had been to a Minoan funeral was describing it to his family back in Greece, and someone heard it wrong. Maybe a child. He said "the head of a bull with the body of a man," and instead of a dead body, the listener imagines the monster that became known as the Minotaur. And he can't get it out of his mind. He begins making up a story about the Monster. It could have happened that way.

That funny little map of the Viking "trip" in the archipelago, Island hopping from Norway to Island to Greenland to Vinland. Was actually 4000km long In some of the most treacherous waters

There's a suggestion that the Wooden Horse of Troy was actually a ship. Greeks used a metaphorical expression, "horses of the sea" to refer to ships, and it would have been much easier for the besiegers to leave one of their vessels behind than find the wood to build a gigantic statue.

53 minutes flew by. God what a great presentation.
