Hello! Pinning amendments here:
1. Clarifying that Neil Gaiman has not presently been found guilty. These are allegations.
2. George Eliot was the pen name of female author Mary Ann Evans

the women yearn the maze

Spirited Away is a non-Western example of this phenomenon, and even the Pixar movie Inside Out arguably fits this trope.

I think another remarkable thing about these movies is the kindness with how the women treat scary looking creatures, that don't always have their best interest in mind, within the labyrinths. It's really admirable

Not to be dramatic but this explains my entire personality and taste in movies. The maze as an external system women are forced to navigate while men get to explore their own minds?? That observation alone deserves a standing ovation 👏💗

It’s fascinating see the labyrinths in these movies as circular cause in sacred geometry circles are often interpreted as a feminine symbol which speaks to cycles of birth, death and renewal. Enlightening video as always beautiful 🫶🏾

Dorothy, chihiro and Lucy of Narnia deserve to be in this group!

I know it wasn't intentional, but I think it's actually rather genius that the video starts so well lit and inviting, and then progressively gets darker and darker the longer we spend watching.

It's just like the plots of the stories you're discussing: the girls enter the maze with an initial sense of wonder, and then growing terror as the dangers within male themselves known.

I dunno, I just think it's neat ✨

Very interesting point about the labyrinth being the mind for men and the world for women. I wonder if the Neverending story then can be applied as the preteen/boy version of the male equivalent of the maze movie- since Bastian is not allowed to navigate his grief in the real world, he mentally escapes to Fantasia to be able to move through his grief and depression by facing the Nothing.

"Fran Bow" is also an excellent example to this trope!

I never considered the SA implications of the tree scene in Pan's Labyrinth but now that you bring it up it is absolutely heartbreaking that Ophelia's mother doesn't show more concern and just scolds her for ruining the dress.

This has always been my fav kind of fantasy! More "male" fantasy kinda disappoints me with its travels and open worlds and journeys to kill something (dragon, demon, king, whatever), they lack the mystery and darkness of the maze, and the male protagonists lack the curiosity of the maze dwellers.

I think many studio ghibli’s films could fit into this mold, especially “ my neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited away”

@peachykeenjellybeann2735 8 months ago

The parallel you drew between girls danger in the labyrinths being the same danger in our external world blew my mind and men’s labyrinth being in their mind because they are safe in the world took me out. I love this and I need to watch more of your videos now. 😅

In Squid Game season 3 there's a labyrinth game, similar to this. The girl trio tries to escape together, one is pregnant, another is an old mom, and the other is trans. And the men go wild, some embracing cruelty, and some literally going crazy. As you said, a difference of psychological and physical labyrinths.

I feel like "Over The Garden Wall" applies perfectly especially to the part where you were talking about maze stories focused on men and how they mostly focus on the mind as a version of this with two brothers ending up lost in this place called the unknown (which is often theorized to be purgatory) and how it's meant to symbolize Wirt, the older brother needing to get over his fears and anxieties and put himself out there to sociallize, to make friends and talk to his crush

Labyrinth has always been one of my all time favorite films and its aesthetics and meaning were especially relevant to me growing up. The feelings of hopelessness, unfairness, and moving forward with no sign of progress stick with me.

I love the version of the end of Ariadne’s story where, after being abandoned by Perseus, Dionysus comes to her and says that she’s done enough for everyone else, and now she should live for herself and her own joy. Maybe we can choose to escape and be happy.

On the PSA about young girls and boys feeling isolated is so real.
Idk why our brains do that but once you jump the teen years your brain actually starts to make you feel more grounded on reality
