How did we come to this?
Capitalism. The serial killer of art.

OMG I FORGOT ABOUT THE AI MARKETING CAMPAIGN. crazy to do that and then try and do some like half hearted critique on the dangers of ai deepfakes.

the part about modern horror trends genuinely got me because YES. scream had the perfect opportunity to drag elevated horror, trauma discourse, prestige horror, the endless “is it horror or is it ART?” conversation, and the way studios package trauma as an aesthetic 😭 instead we keep getting increasingly elaborate explanations for why ghostface is once again doing ghostface activities

I really think what works about Kevin Williamson's earlier films (like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer) is that they're teen dramas with a slasher plot. They captured the blend of alienation and self-reference that felt like an essential part of 90s teendom. I don't think you can just remix the plot points and commentary on genre and get the same results.

It’s like the old saying goes: “You either die an indie classic or live long enough to see yourself become a franchise.” 😔🪦

Wonderful analysis as always beautiful! 👏🏾🫶🏾

The Scream audience no longer being treated as intelligent consumers it is such a key issue in the fall of the franchise. I love a mindless, gory horror romp as much as the next person, but if we look at current horror box office hits it’s clear that the modern audience likes to be trusted to have a level of intelligence, critical thinking skills and curiosity. 7 really did feel like a mindless cash grab which lacked the charisma and wit of earlier instalments and the nostalgia bait of it all just felt borderline insulting to someone who is a long standing fan

23:14 "This isn't a scream it's an echo" is probably the most succinct description of Scream 7 i've ever heard. Maybe the fanchise had to die for its ghost(face) to become something new

My problem with the scream series is the predictably and repetitiveness. We’ve done the two Ghostface schtick to death, every Ghostface has a monologue about why they’re killing… giving Sidney or Sam or whoever the time to ambush them and kill them. We’re 7 movies deep into the franchise. Why not give us a Ghostface that wins? Or a secret Ghostface nobody knew about, or a Ghostface who just kills ‘because’ and drops the monologue. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT and for god sakes kill the Meeks twins because their plot armor is ridiculous

A new Girl on Film video, chores to do, and the house to myself? I'm in for a great Sunday afternoon

Basically Scream, like everything commodified by our capitalist system, became the very thing it was countering, criticising or satirising. Scream, in real life, became Stab.

I think Scream lost itself when it decided to make Sam have psychosis and be incredibly violent, as well as retroactively giving Billy psychosis. That trope seems very much like something Scream would tackle, but instead they lean into it and it makes for a, in my opinion, ableist representation of someone who has psychosis. I really enjoy most of 5cream, it feels more like a Scream movie than 4 did, despite me loving the 4th film, as it actually addresses tropes in requels. It just really disappoints me that they lean on an ableist trope rather than address it as a form of commentary.

As a huge scream fan Scream 7 was a huge disappointment because even the returning legacy characters and new returning characters from Scream 5/6 fell so incredibly flat. Even the new characters felt so incredibly lifeless and there was truly just no fun left in how their marketing and their actions behind the scenes meant nothing they did on screen meant anything at all.

I absolutely adore how you format your videos and this one in particular was perfect. I like understanding the lore of these films and appreciate how you put the information together!

7 doing so well despite being so bad is very reflective of the times

@Chuuzus 2 months ago

unpopular opinion but Scream 4 is genuinely the best Scream movie because it predicated how people would become hungry for fame on the internet and they would do anything for clout

Scream 1 was released when I was 7 and it became an instant classic for me! Despite the fact that I was entirely too young to understand all of the themes of this movie, I kept coming back to it. And now 30 years later I still hold Scream 1, 2, & 3 very near and dear to my heart ❤

I am a big scream 4 fan because of Jill, I think she’s one of if not the best Ghostface.
But then by scream 5 and the nods to babadook and elevated horror I didn’t think it was solely a name drop and I didn’t think it was to deep dive into those genre conventions. I felt like it was saying “oh horror’s gone all artsy and high brow on us? Cool… cool cool cool… this is not that movie this is a slasher!”
