The scary thing about this movie for me was that I related to her. It wasn’t the gore or violence it was the fact that I finished the movie scared that one day I would snap.

I kinda felt bad for Mitzy because she actually did care about Pearl.

"Why don't you love me the way I need you to." And you're no longer a child, I'm so scared man.

Something I realized in this analysis is with the Wizard of Oz analogy, the projectionist is the Scarecrow (who she imagines during the scarecrow scene), her dad is the Tin Man (can't move), and her mom is the Cowardly Lion (too scared to leave the farm, sheltering Pearl).

Pearl is one of my favorite horror films, Wizard of Oz is one of my all time favorite pieces of media so I love noticing the similarities and callbacks.

I thought that the egg squishing scene kinda represented her own resentment of motherhood. She was relieved when she lost her baby and never wanted to be a mom. She probably wished she could crush her own eggs like that.

I interpreted Mitzy’s death scene in that Mitzy genuinely did not get the part. She originally said she didn’t, but then Pearl said “don’t lie to me.” and sometimes when you tell the truth and you know the other person is looking for a different answer, you just say the opposite in hopes that telling them what they’re already insisting is the truth will get you out of the situation.

i think watching Pearl first gives you more insight and allows you to appreciate X more

Great video! I always felt bad about that roasted pig. The mom is so offended at the idea of charity, too proud to accept it, but is ok with letting it rot on the porch. For someone who acts so self-righteous you'd think waste in a time like that would be a bigger sin. Side note that's totally off topic, your lipstick color in this is GORGEOUS 😍

Pearl's mom is from "The Gilded Age" where if you weren't extremely wealthy, you were dirt poor and often exploited, working for "peanuts" and your life was seen as expendable by the rich jerks.  Pearl is of "The Silent Generation" that lived through both world wars with The Great Depression in the middle.  In this part of the time line, The Depression hasn't happened yet but her mom is most likely trying to convince her that being self-sustaining and not working under a boss is the safer option because you only work as hard as you need to and you're not put in exhausting, stressful, and dangerous situations for endless days with no break until you break.  Watching Pearl express her frustrations and then unapologetically lets her actions follow through those frustrations is cathartic to watch.  Watching someone just loose it is kind of like riding along with the character but without the stakes.

As someone with cptsd and who lives in a isolated town, this movie actually makes me cry

2:36 (bc i am a history autistic) 1918 was actually the winding down of WW1 but WAS the explosion of the Spanish flu. Granted it’s thought now that this specific pandemic was actually caused by the war in general (all those men from around the world in the same, unclean and crowded areas) and Spain was just catching a stray.

The setting of Pearl reminds me of the life my late grandmother was forced to live at the time. Married the first man who propose who barely knew her and left on a farm in texas while he was at war. This was a lot of the poor women's lives if they were "lucky" and pearl just dissented into madness and wanted out.

12:53 This scarecrow scene had to be pretty much directly taken from a Tales from the Crypt episode in 1990 called Four-sided Triangle.
  In that episode there a woman in her late teens/early 20s named Mary Jo, who pretty much held prisoner by this couple in their 60s to work on their outdated farm for no pay. The husband is a perv and tries to assault her and the wife is jealous that her husband has an interest in her so abuses Mary Jo as revenge for something she has no control over.
  Mary Jo runs into the corn field one night, finds a scarecrow and hallucinates it’s alive. She visits it for a few nights, dances, flirts, and eventually does “more”. She tells the couple a bunch of times that her and the scarecrow are in love and he will take her away from the farm and they will live happily ever after. The couple tell her she’s crazy and she screams at them that he’s “her man” and he’s real.
  Finally, one night Mary Jo is out there and they are getting ready to do the deed (or maybe they actually were doing it, it was HBO after all but I was watching it on network tv so it was edited), when the wife comes out and confronts her. The wife decides to prove to her how delusional she is by stabbing the scarecrow repeatedly with a pitchfork, only to discover it’s bleeding. Turns out her husband  decided to dressed up as the scarecrow when he saw what Mary Jo was doing with it… cuz he’s a sick pervert. The wife killed her disgusting husband and the episode ended with both woman distraught, one losing her husband and the other, her imaginary lover.

I think in the scene where Pearl is trying to figure out if her dad is still mentally present is slightly understandable because back then we didn't understand as much about medicine.  I can understand her wanting to know if he's aware of things, or if he can still feel pain because she probably doesn't understand much about the concept of paralysis.  I also think there is some debate around if she didn't see her father as a person, or if in her mind killing him was a mercy.  Maybe Pearl came to the conclusion that her dad wasn't mentally aware and she thought it cruel to keep him alive.  Or in the other direction, she could think it's cruel to keep him alive in a state where he can't even speak or do something as small as feed himself.  I'm not saying I agree with the thought process, just that she might have seen it as compassionate.

Edit: I just got to the part where Pearl actually takes her dad out and the concept of her viewing it as merciful is mentioned lol oops

Whenever I rewatch the x series I start with Pearl. To me, watching pearl first adds more depth to her character in x.

I think Pearl’s mother knew that there was something a little off about her daughter; maybe not that her daughter was homicidal, but something was off. But I also think her mother has that Boomer mentality of “I wasn’t given X so why do you think you should be given X?!” “I had to accept the lot in life, regardless of my own desires and wishes. how dare YOU think that you deserve different for yourself”. There’s a sense of resentment toward Pearl for wanting more out of life. Because her mother was not able to change her own life circumstances for any myriad of reasons. That somehow means that Pearl should have to do the same.

Pearl was tragic and relatable until she started offing people 😅.
