I came here wanting to learn more about Punpun, not realize the root of my insecure behavior leading to a existential crisis!

Very good vibrations

I read Punpun when i was in highschool during a rough time in life. I deeply sympathized with Punpun and felt devastated when Aiko killed herself. I latched onto a similar fantasy as her, that my S/O at the time would help me runaway from my shitty situation. Earlier this year our relationship came to an end due to external circumstances, and I realized the futility of waiting "to be saved"; That all the bad stuff would suddenly end if I kept shouting and stomping on the ground.

And as silly as it sounds, remembering how much pain Aiko's death had on Punpun and how he still managed to keep living- regardless of the pain- helped a lot. That all the bad things in my life didn't just serve to torture my existence, that it was just the price to pay for living. Good things, bad things, good people, bad people- Cruelty and kindness comes and goes, "...sometimes, life's a bitch and then you keep living." (Bojack Horseman).

Which I guess is all to say, fantastic analysis.

Maybe I’m oversimplifying it, but it feels a lot like a story about growing up without enough parental love.

Punpun, Aiko, Shimizu, Seki, Yuuichi - most of the really broken characters seem to be missing that kind of safe, unconditional care. And the people who actually help them are often the ones who take on that role: Midori for Yuuichi, Sachi for Punpun, even Shishido in a smaller way.

That’s also why I don’t think Punpun and Aiko could ever really save each other. They both desperately needed that kind of love, but neither of them knew how to give it.

For the ending with the next generation of kids the same pain can repeat, but maybe it doesn’t have to if those kids grow up actually feeling loved and safe.

Even the stars fit that for me: something pure you had as a child, lost later, and spend your adult life trying to find again.

This is legitimately one of the best videos you’ve done. Pun pun is an extremely difficult story to interpret an analyze. I read it about 10 years ago, and while I’m experienced it, I also told myself I couldn’t read it again. This brought back a lot of emotions from when I originally read it. I remember having to take breaks in between some of the story arcs due to how heavy the subject matters and how it made me reflect on some of my own faults throughout life. But your monologue at the end perfectly in capitalizes what makes the story and many others like it so interesting. It helps you realize that you’re the only one that can make the changes in your life that will only benefit yourself and possibly those around you. And your perspective and actions don’t have to be the person you will become or could continue to be. I’ve also come to realize that talking it out with people you’re close to can be really therapeutic and make you realize that sometimes your life is as bad as you make it out to be. Pun pun is a very cautious take of how quickly someone could devolve if they don’t take care of themselves, but also realizing that you can live with the mistakes your make a lot the way.

Also grateful that the author of this series is in a better space. He admitted that he was going through extreme depression and denial while writing pun pun and you can tell through some of the themes. It was a way to help him gradually overcome some of the mental issues he was dealing with. He ended up writing some other stories that were pretty dark and twisted, but nothing as detailed as this.

I had to take a break during this video, everything leading up to this point in my life while i sit on the edge of adulthood is closing in & i feel like i can't breathe

Wow. Probably the best video essay on a series I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The quality of descriptions, storytelling and deeper meaning along with a central message to thread the story into brings this video into touching the very essence of your soul. Dear reader, if you too are here after reading PunPun or before, regardless, sit back and be entranced by the incredible complexity of the series and how our sensei unravels the ball of thread to reveal a brilliant lasting message that can touch almost anyone's soul (mine included)  and unearth many behaviors and idealisms you might've never seen within. Thank you.

sock sensei doing punpun? peak on peak

The hardest part for me when reading this manga, was cheering for Punpun and Aiko getting together, hoping that this would make them happy and adjust their problems (even though I had seen some spoilers beforehand about their end). I felt so bad for Aiko, that couldn't feel even a little of joy knowing Punpun had managed to move on. Their relationship should've been good and beautiful, and not just another cicle of abuse to her.
Thanks you for doing this video, I finished the manga yesterday and couldn't see positive points on the history, but hearing everything you said, I could get a better interpretation.
This manga hurts cause It's real, and its raw. We frequently identify some of our feelings on the characters, and that's something powerful that can cause a mix on our mental.
A magnificent work, that I wouldn't recommend to anyone.
To who read it and managed to come to this video, to read my coment: Stay safe and seek help if needed 🤍

Sachi was the only person who truly saved Punpun and probably the best 2 years of his life when he was with her and rest of group, Aiko and Punpun should've never met again

Oh god, he did it. The mad lad did it.

Edit: I remember reading this story, about 2-3 years ago. I read the whole story within a span of two days. The last chapter, finished at 4am on a Sunday in the fall. I remember just laying there, in bed. Having no idea how to process the story, the events that occurred, and with Aiko's death. I felt numb and in shock when scrolling to the next page and seeing that panel of Aiko, hanging lifelessly. I laid there in bed, dropping my phone on my chest, staring at the ceiling in the darkness. Until finally, a tear formed and streaked down towards the pillow. Then, i broke down. After that, getting through the next chapters and finally finishing the story felt like a blur and ever since then, no story has hit me quite the same as this one.

I felt that in some ways, Pun Pun's story reflected my own.

Thank you for covering this story Sensei.

I honestly prefer the interpretation that Shimizu did not make it out of the fire, and that Seki now sees him the same way Shimizu saw his mother, in a sick twisted way Seki learned to understand Shimizu a lot more in his death than he ever even tried while he was alive. I think this is also supported by Shimizu not being at the reunion.

Remember everyone, strength isn't throwing your feelings away. Strength feeling every awful moment and remembering there are beautiful parts worth continuing for and you might just be that beautiful part in someone else day. A tiny act of kindness can save someone's entire world, please keep trying... please keep living. Please keep loving and moving forward and reach out if you need it. Everyone needs help and no one gets through it all alone.

I can relate with Punpun to a degree. I'm an adult now and I'm attempting to rebuild my life after years of abuse and self loathing. It's not easy, but it's also not as hard as some might think.

Yknow I never understood the saying “you reap what you sow.” Until reading this comic, it hit hard. Don’t hear a lot of people talk about it and it’s a really good comic

Did you guys ever notice the cover of the chapter where punpun goes with aiko to her house has a ton of stop signs everywhere

Why does this manga sound almost like what I'm dealing with right now? How Punpun has a fractured sense of self because of the lack of "Structured" parental figures, he only remembers good parts of his life only as sobering afterthoughts when dealing with personal issues and other stuff.

It's like the mangaka had taken most of my life and put it to paper almost, cuz I've also had to deal with almost the same shit that Punpun had. Either way, good analysis Sock-kun.

PS: I didn't need to cry 4 hours later again upon hearing this, but this is a beautiful manga and ya made me do so.

Everytime I come to these videos, it's like a flow of wisdom washes over me.
