"The Iranian public did not react in the way that Israel and the United States anticipated, they didn't see the war as an opportunity to rise up. They rallied to the flag, and they began to interpret the war, not as a war on the Islamic Republic to liberate them, but as a war on their country, designed to break it down, destroy infrastructure and potentially to disintegrate the country."

In this latest episode of The David Hearst Podcast, MEE's editor in chief, David Hearst, is joined by American-Iranian political analyst Vali Nasr to discuss Trump's latest statements on the ceasefire ending, Iran's bargaining position since the war and if the old order of things in the Middle East are changing.

The war on Iran, argues Professor Nasr, was meant to prove the Iranian opposition and end the regime. What ended up happening was the opposite.

Professor of International Affairs at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Nasr is the author of a wide range of books, the latest of which, Iran Grand Strategy, he argued that Iran’s actions were driven by a pragmatic pursuit of national interest rather than ideology
