The Victorian Myth of "The Undeserving Poor" is just so attractive to the ruling class, they just fall back into it, I think that this is just fear and loathing of young people or jealously which is completely insane because young people are so essential for the future of the country and the world.
I believe the term âWelfareâ is an Americanism (where else would it come from). In more civilised times it was called Social Security. âWelfareâ is a term which demeans those unfortunate enough to have to claim Social Security.
18:50 Instead we should ask why the rich arenât paying their fair share to make our institutions like the NHS run smoothly! And are able to provide services to everyone that needs them!
Being nearly 14 at the time, and thus being certain I understood everything, I can remember the 1959 election. Progressive Tories such as Iain Macleod and Rab Butler and Labour led by the right wing Gaitskell (I had already been to a meeting to boo him, with YCND) led to "Butskellism". One of the main yah-boo points of the election was "We build more houses than you". That meant council houses.
Whately is an idiot, they want to cut benefits and then give us food stamps so they can tell us what we'll be allowed to buy, how much is this going to cost in administration?
As an Irish person something I find amusing listening to British politicians talking about welfare cuts is they seem to have no clue that welfare rates and benefits are already significantly worse in the UK than almost any other country in the western European area. Basic unemployment rate in Ireland is about double what it is in the UK. We have less unemployment than the UK and in my opinion, less youngsters turning to violence and far right ideologies.
A benefit that is time-limited .. A benefit that us based on past contributions ... A benefit that requires efforts to be made to find work again .. ALL of this already exists. It's called New Style Jobseekers Allowance. So any politician serious about these principles just needs to find ways of making THAT paynent more generous. But, of course, that's not their real intent.
Only 6 months to find a job? We have new graduates in the US that can't find work for 18 months - including tech! IMO, the English econo is no better than the American one.
