On July 17 1995, Newsweek unveiled its infamous cover: "Bisexuality: Not Gay. Not Straight. A New Sexual Identity Emerges." But what if bisexuality WASN'T invented in 1995? 🤔 Let's take a trip down memory lane and analyse media tropes around bisexuality. Oh and Happy Pride!

I'm not bisexual myself (I'm a lesbian), but back when I was 16 I had this classmate who was a very proud, open bi girl. We had english classes together so I didn't see her much but admired her a lot because we lived in an extremely conservative area where showing the slightest signs of not being straight/cis would get you isolated by everyone, even by the teachers. I learned that she got slut shamed a lot, but she wasn't afraid of defending herself. I still think about her to this day

The best way to give Pride Month a nice send off before some of us become invisible again from tomorrow.

i feel really bad for those lesbians holy shit. they thought it was a show about wlw just to be forced to share a bed with violent homophobic men.

The funny thing is that there has always been openly bisexual celebrities. Bi-erasure exists despite some of our biggest cultural icons (for example Marlene Dietrich, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Madonna, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury) were known to be bisexuals. But somehow it was an impossible concept at the same time.

They made those women share beds with agressive homophobic men??

bisexual flag colors are literally best mood lighting and anyone who disagrees is bifobic

I think that biphobic episode from ‘Sex and the City’ was foundational trauma for a lot of people. I remember fighting against the tripe spewed by Carrie.

My queer peers deserve better no matter who they love ❤

Bisexual men are horribly underrated in media.

Bisexuality is a single sexual orientation, just as gay or straight are. Being bi does not mean refraining from settling on a sexual orientation.

I'm a teacher, and I've noticed that over the past 20 years. students are generally more positive about lgbt+ classmates, but it varies hugely year to year and class to class. Like the most influential kids have sadly a bigger role to play than my efforts.

How am I just now learning Lindsay Lohan is bisexual? Bi erasure is crazy

When I tried to come out as Bi to one of my family members, they straight up informed me "I went to a Bar Mitzvah once, but that doesn't make me Jewish." Afterwards, I stopped trying, since there's simply no changing some people.

Being bisexual and goth is very funny, because it makes people scared for the same reasons: craved, and feared by the same fantasies about us.

@kstar1489 3 months ago (edited)

The reason people want bisexual to actually be said is because in these shows when someone goes from dating one to another people often do not register as bisexual or under the bisexual umbrella, but as “going from straight to gay” or “gay to straight”. Or as a “phase”. You see this in real life too. People saying a bi person “was” straight or gay until they met their partner and now they are “gay/straight” depending on the gender of the person they are now with. Saying a label is needed to remind people that bi, pan, whatever is an identity in itself.

I don't have any skin in this game but my best friend is bi. He says it's difficult to date women because a lot of straight women ask him intrusive questions about his past sexual partners.
