How about incorporating a few modifications to turn a vessel on the water into a hydroelectric alternator/generator capable of generating its own power supply to feed the motors and electonics on board. I have a prototype.
I own a Moody 422 1987 sailboat with a 700 hours Volvo Penta D60. When you are on a schedule, diesel gives you the range. So far there are not that many offshore sailors on purely electric motors. Sailing Uma is planning to do it. But well respected offshore experts like James Evenson (Be The Captain book and channel), have deep reservations about reliability offshore. Thank you for sharing your insights on the video.
I'm in the process of stripping my old gas out and going electric and would love to include the engine but the costs need to come down more. My yanmar still has another 5 or 6 seasons in her and I know I have 200nm range not something I can replicate with electric at this stage without filling my 35' yacht up with batteries.
Yeah I want to be able to charge with Shore-power but also with Solar and a Wind Turbine . There is also the Kite option that you can use as a range extension !
I’ve owned my 38’ sailboat for six years. I’ve filled my 45 gallon tank twice. I use my sweet little diesel to out of and back into the marina and the few times when there’s little wind.
An hybrid that can charge and boost electric okay a salt water charge with an electolite fluid I’m sure theirs some good modifications that can produce thrust and charging
Energy / fuel for diesel you have to buy in limited spaces - wind, solar and hydropower energy you have privided across the board. If you design the energy generation and storage systems well—an electric motor definitely beats everything else: it is more reliable, simpler in construction, lighter, and takes up less space. Combine that with sails, and you have a system that offers complete independence from fluctuating fuel prices and the need to find refueling stops.
I have a 1970s Volvo MD2B. It still runs well 50 years later. I can even hand start it.
I considered moving to Electric, but every start up that died left owners with no support. Also batteries are a fire risk. I haven't heard of any old lead acid battery catching fire. and you have to custom build each system to make it work in your boat.
In short, it is not worth the time and money to convert.
Maybe one day when they make it plug and play and not plug and pray........
How to cross the doldrums when you need to motor 3 days….. diesel is not dead. Maybe a hybrid system will work but its more complex expensive and probably hard to fix at sea.
Great information. So what would be a meaningful solar array, propeller regenerative and possibly wind turbine system to power the system on the basic system for say a 40 ft sailboat? What I’m after is when can this go without diesel or is that not realistic?
