In the winter of 1934, a Quebec mechanic couldn't get his sick little boy through the snow to a hospital in time. That mechanic was Joseph-Armand Bombardier, and the machine he went on to build to cross the snow started a company that would one day build the fastest business jet in the world.
This is the story of how Bombardier got from Valcourt to the sound barrier. It runs from the B7 snow bus and the Ski-Doo to Montreal Metro and New York subway cars, then to Canadair, the Challenger and the CRJ. Then comes the CSeries gamble that nearly broke the company and ended with Airbus renaming it the A220, followed by the great sell-off that left Bombardier with one business: jets. It ends with a 2021 test flight where a Bombardier business jet broke the sound barrier, and the Global 8000 that came out of it. It's the fastest civil aircraft since Concorde, with an 8,000-nautical-mile range, and it entered service in December 2025. We also cover whether it really "shook the industry."
