Never place a circuit board on something that gets hot, even thru the components might work their lifespan is reduced, electrolytic capacitors last around 10 years however, in a hot environment they deteriorate much faster; so will IC chips. Electronic components with higher mass should never be soldered directly to a circuit board that will be placed in an environment with high vibration and even lower vibration environments at certain frequencies will cause similar solder joint failure, a good example of this is ABS/traction control system failure in sportscars that fail early due to the vehicles stiffer suspension placing more stress on the solder joints that connect to and provides some of the relays and actuator solenoid support; no gluing the parts to the circuit board does not help that much. Plastic that flexes will eventually fail two causes are hot environments that speed up the breakdown of the long polymer  strings that makeup plastic as well as flexing in cold environments will cause even rubber to fail.

As they say, you only build something once, then it needs to be maintained forever. This car seems to be disposable, not repairable.

I had a 1966 Plymouth Valiant 225 cubic inch and a three in the tree manual stick shift. It had over 500,000 kilometres on it .And that slant 6 cylinder engine was so easy to work on. All that was there to see was a carburator air filter and down below an oil filter. And of course the block.Bench seats in the front and back. It ran forever. In forty below zero weather, it would start on the first turn of the key. I miss that car. It was the most reliable car ever. And you hardly had to do any maintainance.

KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid, seems to be lost by most manufacturers.  The thing that seems to be the standard today from most manufacturers is to throw more technology and complexity into the game will save the day.   Often this approach is only a sales driven issue, most people today can't even raise the hood of their car to check the oil, but on the other hand they demand all of these high tech and expensive vehicles can only be serviced by highly trained and specialized technicians.  That being said suddenly quality control of components employed.  Look at how many failures surfacing today in the automotive arena are traced back to overengineering by building a complex component that was outsourced and failed to meet quality standards.  Or another of these major failures revolves around designed in problems, components that are unnecessarly over complex and failure-prone if even there is the slightest issue surfaces.

The fact that it is too expensive to fix is the main reason we need robot taxi own by the company that makes them.

Only one thing to care about for the user, how much it cost to use when you need one. Every other considerations are under the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Unless you're driving for pleasure, this would be the best option.

The unrealistic government Cafe standards and the strain of the manufacturers to comply is what at fault for the majority of domestically engineered automobiles today. I can only blame ourselves.

The answer to durability issue is a lifetime warranty or replacement surcharge

Years ago Ford tore down the new mini and estimated BMC would lose on every car at their selling point. So nothing new in tear downs. Ford were also into vertical integration, raw materials in one end, cars out the other. What goes around comes around.

The problem with combining parts ,  is reflected in vehicles where for example you break  the inside door handle but in order to fix it you have to buy a whole new door panel rather than replace just the hand.

Combine 5 systems sucject to failure into one unit, the faillure of one unit requires the repair/replacement of all five systems.  This  means repair is at least 5 times higher.

The first thing I thought of was that this is a disposable car. If anything goes wrong, throw it away and buy another one. Great for the manufacturer: it's cheaper to sell, but impossible to repair. I'd much rather buy something a little more expensive, but is repairable and will last a LOT longer.

When several components are integrated into one single unit it means that when one of those individual components fails the entire unit must be replaced. Cost efficient to manufacture, yes, but the cost maintenance certainly increases.

It reminds me of those all-in-one stereo systems from the ’80s and ’90s—the bulky towers that packed a CD player, radio, and cassette deck into one unit. The problem was, if just one component broke, the whole thing usually wasn’t worth repairing.

I remember that Ford was astonished by the Mini and did a costing exercise to see how Austin/Morris could do it so cheaply. They found that the Mini would cost more to builld than its selling price.

We ended up taking our 2020 BJEV EV to a BYD shop in Shenzhen for the annual 12€ checkup. While there, I asked around how are the BYD cars to service. One of the mechanics told me: "As you can see most cars are the hybrid models, so they have engines that need frequent service. The EV's are here mostly if they get into accidents. They are very reliable because the motor unit is a one package, no outside cables or hoses, very simple. And if something needs repairs, you just remove the top lid and replace the PC-board. The motors and battery packs have been tested on taxis already 15 years, and driven more than 500 000 km. No problems there."
