Penn badgley did an amazing work on this character. He's a great actor

Analysing Evil: Bojack Horseman?

I think his mum did abuse him with her actions, but it was emotional abuse. Abandoning him did him huge damage, especially as she chose to "keep" her other male son. But she also emotionally abused him before she abandoned him. For example, by dragging him to meet strange men, making him her emotional support/treating him like an adult confidante, exposing him to adult sexual dynamics, and showing him the gun and telling him she would kill his dad one day.

Still can't believe Joe Goldberg was the Bay Harbor Butcher

Analyzing Evil: Love Quinn only fair to do his partner in crime

Joe is the ultimate case of me understanding how someone could end up so awful yet still its inexcusable. I find the guy so interesting because I feel like everyone justifies their actions on a daily from small to big things to make themselves feel better good or bad. Granted most aren't doing anything as severe throughout the show but seeing the walking contradiction that is Joe Goldberg make this show one I find myself rewatching. Watching him go from feeling the need to justify his actions to simply loving his kills was such a fascinating downfall. I rooted for him in season 2 in a weird way but by the end of that I realized the cycle would continue until he was dead or behind bars.

Joe’s obsession with women is what drives him into insanity, believing he’s in control of them and kills them whenever they not like him or find out who he is. That’s what I find terrifying about him is his obsession and violent tendencies

I suggest that you do Love Quinn next as she was a big part of Joe's story while being a prominent character that could stand alone.

After watching this show for the first time recently, I can safely say that Joe deserves all the praise he gets as a villain, I am probably gonna have to rewatch the show again with a new perspective to pick up on potential things I missed. But glad to see Joe be covered for today!

As for a suggestion, because it’s the spooky season, I am gonna suggest The King in Yellow cult from True Detective or Errol Childress specifically.

I like that you brought up how his speech either seems forced or disingenuous, because it seems like every obsession required him to adapt to his surroundings in a unique way, and the social  interactions were apart of that.

Thanks so much for your words at the end. I dated someone who’s a version of Joe light, and seeing it in the show actually helped me see it in real life and open my eyes to the reality. I’m glad I got out of it, and I hope more men can be like you and understand why we don’t feel safe. When I cross the road to not have a man walk behind me, it’s not a personal attack on that guy - I don’t know him, it’s about me being able to walk home a bit safer, and because I’ve been conditioned that way from many, many horrible encounters. So thank you so much.

Penn Badgley acted Joe Goldberg to exquisite perfection!

Also: to women especially, but really this can apply to anyone: don't let your potential partners love bomb you in the beginning! It is just a short cut to real intimacy. I know it's tempting to believe that we are as amazing as he says we are (because in reality we ARE), however, a healthy relationship unfolds naturally over time. I know it can be difficult, but, personally, I remove sex from the equation for the first 3 months when entering a new relationship. The toxic people drop like flies. And I don't end up doing something I'll regret later. Stay safe out there, everyone!

To be fair, he didnt really ruin Paco's life, unless we can conclude that he becomes traumatized later in life when he learns he played a part in Beck's death.

Joe is an essential for this list.

21:00 ... 100%. when i first watched You, i was insanely attracted to joe, curse penn badgely's charisma and good looks, but also i enjoyed the passionate and charming aspects tied in with his villainy. though i recently rewatched you after having my own experience with a joe, i couldn't look at him the same way, i had a completely different experience with the story, exactly like the "this guy is a freak" reaction. that is where i really admire the writing (from seasons 1-3.)

Joe was a terrifying villain. He may seem nice but in the end he isn't a defender he's an attacker. Joe may have had a horrible backstory but there's no justification on what he has done. A man who's actions are horrifying and as a result he deserves to be in jail for his crimes. Joe isn't a role model but I can understand why he acted this way. However it is unhealthy. If you end up becoming a Joe seek some help because this method is only harming the very thing you wish to protect. Please don't become like Joe and never let a horrible behavior used as a justification

The violence against women is the worst of it. Between him strangling Beck, locking Marianne in the cage, kidnapping Candace, trying to do what he did to Beck to Louise...
.
Marianne hit the nail on the head. This character is an abuser.

I was with a narcissist, and though this was triggering, this was so fucking good. It’s crazy how obvious shit is when you know what to look for
