to whoever said that “olivia’s PR is good at creating narratives”: beloved. im gonna hold your hand when i say this. that’s what EVERY celeb’s PR does. every celeb has PR managers who manage their public image for specific narratives. and that’s not inherently a bad or nefarious thing! there are examples of this being used for good, like princess diana shaking hands with an AIDS patient leading to people being more compassionate to people with HIV. i think fans and stans don’t like to think that about their fave tho because it breaks illusion that their emotions and “connection” for lack of a better word toward their fave is based in knowing their hearts and real selves, even distantly, instead of being the result of a managed and at least filtered PR strategy.

Looking back it’s wild how these pop girls’ rivalries can permanently impact their reputations, but the subjects of the rivalries are so ephemeral. Everyone knows that Lindsay Lohan was controversial but I challenge anyone to remember the details of her beef with Hilary duff

I still remember the Britney vs. Jessica vs. Mandy vs. Christina nonsense of the mid-90s. The media treats women like there's only one spot they all need to fight to the death over. Which has always been ridiculous, but seems even moreso now, when women are carrying pop music as a genre on their backs. The genre can't afford to lose a single star, there simply aren't enough to justify the need for this kind of manufactures competition.

One of them is going to get called "baby" by their partner and the internet will catch fire. Definitely stay away from baby vegetables.

I find it really confusing how the two of them get so much hate around being sexual when they are both so clearly deliberate in their references and inspirations. I remember the backlash to Miley Cyrus, and how pearl clutching it was and it failed to address the actual racial appropriation problems. They both feel more sure and mature around their styles than cyrus did, and that's impressive to me (not a dig at cyrus).

I really hate the way the interpolations are being used as well, because it's not entirely fair to how art develops and would be bizarre in many other genres.

Normalize defending women against being torn down in the public eye without having to be a fan, or even know who that woman is!!

Perfect timing as I’m looking for something to listen while taking my dogs out for a walk.

"This collective Bechdel fail" is such a fantastic turn of phrase, lolol

In my view, this is less about Olivia vs Sabrina and more about the longstanding tradition of pitting women against each other. Back in the 2010s everyone gave Taylor stick for only every writing about her relationships. In my circle, Hayley Williams was considered way cooler because she wasn't "girly" even though most of Paramore's songs were about relationships too. I also think there is an element of fandom and internet culture increasing these "rivalries" because fandom has become way more parasocial than ever before.
Absolute banger of an essay, Ophie!

27:59 This reminds me of something Paris Paloma was talking about how we're living in a world with patriarchy and how what we do in embracing or rejecting different parts of it still comes down to patriarchy in a world without it would your response to anything be different. I've come to realise as a person who hasn't really listened to a lot of Americana pop since I was a teen the only reason I really listen or like the songs from both Sabrina and Olivia is because of the discourse and me wanting to understand so listening to their songs and then feeling protective of them with the unwarranted hate and then found the songs that I liked that I wouldn't have found otherwise (and algorithms algorithming showing me tour performances and enjoying the art in them)

my brain's not braining too well right now, so I'll just comment on how cute JoJo was in that clip of her with her toy. Not sure why she was trying to lick the feather, nor do I care, it was adorable

love the styling on this video.

Ophie you should definitely check out Hayley's last solo album even if you don't care about Paramore. It's just a great pop album!! I'm not a big Paramore girlie but Hayley's solo works is excellent.

I could be totally wrong but I interpret the “‘and I’ll sue you if you step on my lawn’” lyric in Who’s Afraid Of Little Old Me as Taylor’s subtle passive aggressive response to people saying she sued Olivia

The rock tumbling/polishing analogy you used was clever, I liked that. 😁

I'm not invested in any of these people but I'm here to support Ophie ❤

Very here for the pop girlie season of the channel!

I definitely deliberately avoided Olivia because of the fan bs revolving around this interrogation of her song, and I was sympathetic to Sabrina because of people trying to insinuate she was a predator in their fantasies about what happened.

I feel that whole situation and emails I can’t send are kind of integral to where she’s gone in her career, and why she plays with archetype, because she has this extreme experience of the public trying to fit her into one.  I haven’t been a fan of her newer music, but I’ve always had an appreciation for what she does, because of paying attention to the development of her career.

Since you’ve been covering Olivia though, and with this recent campaign people have been on against her, it’s lead me to start listening to her work too, and I’ve been enjoying it. So thanks for that, your videos pushed me to reconsider my avoidance of her.

19:30 reminds me of how i and others were critical of ariana grande's fan base for infantilizing her but then seeing people getting pissy because she's doing things as benign as holding a teddy bear for example and saying she's doing pedo bait like how people say olivia and sabrina are doing.
there being can be a valid critique but people insistence on being willfully obtuse to try and sound super profound are making these conversations muddier and not actually progressing us anywhere
