Old Bike Day
Rides

Welcome back to Village Bike Kitchen.

I have owed you this ride video for a while, but it took me awhile because I had no idea where to ride it! I built this bike to make it look great, but never really considered what type of bike it was. So I finally got it out of the stand and out for a ride to discover what I had actually built.

If you're building your own bikes, you are my brother. Especially if you're bringing old bikes back to life. It's a great hobby to have.

Riding through the skate park looked like fun!
Urban Explorer is a good name for the bike, it’s much like my currently preferred type to build, just to cruise around the park, hit some pavement or a bit of light gravelly stuff., etc, maybe even go get some groceries or visit a cafe. It’s kind of an Urban All-rounder. Nicely done.

The DTH tires are actually made for dirt use. So smooth dirt vs mud and rocks. They make a good all around ATB tire in my experience. Really nice on the pavement like you said, and capable enough for some light duty off road use.

That bike belongs with my friend, Paul.

He had his diamond back ascent stolen in the early 2000s

For me this would be a perfect commuter here in Nottingham - I have a mix of potholed roads, smooth bike lane (not enough!) and a few bits of gravel and dirt paths (usually shortcuts). This would do the trick nicely!

We already have a name for this category: a dad bike! Courtesy of 2nd Life Bikes.

I'm totally new to bikes. I just got a Royal Knight ten speed, I'm about to ride it to work today.

EPITOMY OF Xbike! Its an MTBMX but also a pub Bike, cafe cruiser bike. Comfortable enough for errands-pub run but cappable to do some 90s mountain biking. Some modern Nostalgia ATB if you want...

I just bought a Priority Hot Sauce and it fits this same niche. I like the low/zero maintenance because i don’t have the skills or time to wrench.

I got it to complement my gravel bike as something i could toss around on pub crawls, underbiking on Green/Blue MTB trails and cruise bike paths. Eventually i want to try pump tracks and try to wheelie. I’ve called it a Klunker, Dad Bike but Urban Explorer seems to fit best.

Well done! 🚴

Well done 👍

Did the same on my Kona. Went for the cool vibes with BMX bars. Only to realize I hated how it rided for what I would use it for.... "it's for the look.. I don't light it"

I've just got a Diamondback outlook for free, I've rebuilt it put it on eBay for sale and I'm secretly hoping it doesn't sell because I keep finding myself looking at it hanging in the garage I purposely haven't ridden it because I know if I do it will be a keeper😂
The paint job looks so good.

Was it me or did the gear shifter switch sides in the video..?

I laughed when I saw your bike, it's 80% identical to mine, one thing - I got a C17 brooks saddle, it's such a game changer 😍

i dont get the point why bikes in the UK are cabled "the wrong way". The most people are right handed so it makes sense to operate your rear break with your dominant and probably stronger hand instead of the front break. Or is there a reason becaus you ride on the left side of the road?
