After 20 years clipped in, I rode flat pedals on every bike for 30 days, and my power meter didn’t tell the story I expected.

Subscribing takes less effort than switching pedals before every ride. I’d know. https://bit.ly/Subscribe_to_EBD

Component by component, he's slowly transitioning to being a mountainbiker

carbon road bike with flats and sandals. come at me, bro.

I like the fact that my foot clips into the same position every time and has a bit of healthy type of float, easy on the knees. No slip pedals no bang shins, no foot in the wrong place on a steep climb where you can't adjust
I also like being one with the bike, on every discipline

I’m a flat pedal guy. I tried clipless but went back to flats in one season. I mostly ride gravel but I’m often in exploration mode, so I often get stuck on trails where you cannot bike much. Be able to put my feet on the ground naturally is a game changer. It’s just give me peace of mind and for me peace of mind is a big part of what I look for while riding a bike.

Train your muscles to control the pedal, don't let the pedal control you.

Love wearing “normal” shoes when riding to places like breweries or coffee. Hate the lack of float and fixed foot positioning when using flat pedals. I can’t tell which I prefer… want flats with float!

I did 8500 km this sommer, mostly in Switzerland. Every last kilometer was done wearing Teva Sandals. The very soft soled ones.

I just went clipless July 2024. Not sure I can go back now. Even in the snow I’m clipped in.

I need the float that my clip-less shoes/pedals give me.

I prefer being clipped except on mountain bikes - I hate all the slow technical turns and not being able to put a foot down as easily (but I live in a flat area so I’m not doing the type of descending that you are). Also I agree with your friend - taking a flat studded pedal to the shin sucks. I do have crappy Amazon flat pedal things that I can clip into my pedals and then ride like flats for when I’m just tooling around with my kids so I have normal shoes on to play at the park or whatever.

i pretty much only buy and use parts now that make me ride more and because i end up spending more time biking they have the benefit of keeping me strong and happy, thats the best attribute to any component added. "dont buy "upgrades", ride up grades".

I like the feeling of being connected to the bike. Man, there’s nothing like hitting that perfect pedal stroke and being totally synchronized in the experience. It’s also worth mentioning that a sleek sexy bike looks like it has big Dumbo ears when it has giant flat pedals on it. I’m an aesthetics guy.

I love being able to sprint with as much power as possible, clipless pedals allow this. I always have to hold back a bit on flats.

I've been all bike no car for 3.5 years now. Flats and feetbelts are where its at.

@davidekhalil944 2 hours ago

I ride sandpaper flats, don't tear up my shoes, can reposition my feet easy - 2-400 miles a week, no problemo, shoes are cheap, i don't clack around shops like a dinosaur; mount and dismount without any concern, mud cleats - nope! knee problem from rotational whatever - no. In my mid 60's, i'd never go back to clipless, road, or offroad.

@tjbarke6086 1 hour ago

Flats for MTB and commuting, clips for road, double shots for my gravel bike.

@discplayersports 5 hours ago

Flat is where it’s at. Flats on everything except the fast road bike. Like being able to transition quickly with my feet and walk normal when entering a store.

Quantifying things with power meters and computers really sucks the joy of cycling. I don't need all that data. I just enjoying riding my bike and can feel when I'm leveling up.
